That's how long the FAA holds an expired N number before releasing it to the "available" pool. Seems pretty ridiculous to me.
 
What’s the ‘purge’ date?
 
For comparison, amateur radio call signs, which aren't required to be on anything tangible have a two year hold, even if you voluntarily changed call signs.
 
I spent 5 long years for one number……and the FAA had the nerve……to put me out!

No I'm sorry, what does that date mean? For example I stalked an N number for two years before I got it. It wasn't on a flying plane and I always started checking on the 'purge date'. But it seemed to be yearly.
 
Purge date is apparently only for reserved numbers, not "expired" numbers from previously registered aircraft.
