3k Knots!!!

The X-15 served it's purpose. But it wasn't an air-breather like the Waverider.

One of my first jobs was as USAF junior engineer on the XLR-99 rocket motor from Reaction Motors. It was retired shortly after that. ;)

Was that the big motor, or the one they flew with on the initial flights? Not that either of them were slouches, just curious

Replaced the XLR-11(?) cluster IIRC. The XLR-99 was a single motor and could be throttled.

Cheers

I remember the first flight. Every kid had a model of the X-15 in their room.

My grandmother worked at Edwards Air Force Base from the late 1940s until her death in 1963. When we visited her, we heard the X-15 break the sound barrier regularly.
