I can seeing Garmin crying in their beer in the near future. They have had their day in the sun, and given strong competition are about to see some twilight. They make a good product but IMO are too proud of it in the name of corporate profits. Their day will come, and they may regret their arrogance.

Yes. And those products are price competitive with the competition. That said, at equal prices, Garmin takes many, many sales due to name recognition.

This reminds me that I never take enough pictures at Oshkosh. I tend to enjoy it all with my eyes rather than my camera. I need to make an effort to take more photos.

GA is incredibly useful to any small business owner -- and there are millions of us.

Mary and I just zipped up to Uvalde, TX yesterday for a meeting and lunch. That's a 3.5 hour drive each way -- or a 1 hour flight.

Without the plane, I would have had to pay someone to cover those hours that I needed to be at work. Since we don't have anyone on staff to do that, the journey (and the meeting) would have been effectively impossible.

We do stuff like this pretty much every week. To me, GA is incredibly valuable.

Most people have no idea about GA. It is terribly frustrating.

I fly for health reasons. Well, mental health! I subscribe to opne of my T-shirt slogans:
    Flying is cheaper than therapy.
Well, not really. But more fun!

In the Miami area, you can join Panair flying club, which has 3 172s and 1 182. The 172s go for $50/hr dry. Dues are around $25/month and entry fee is $350 non refundable.

I decided last year to buy the lowest possible cost airplane and now a days cram myself into my 1964 Cessna 150-D. It's practically a 1 person plane for me although I'm able to take occasionally a passenger for short flights. Am I saving money from renting? Not really. Because I'm flying way more than when I was renting. I fly an average of 30 hrs / month. But I absolutely believe that if someone is not so addicted as I am to be above ground, flying 100+ hrs / year would be more effectively done with a little Cessna like mine than renting them from an FBO/flight school.

Do I wanna fly faster? Of course! Would I pay big bucks to rent a faster plane instead of flying my 150 low and slow? No way!

Back to the topic of OSH. I can't wait till the last weekend of this month to start my flight up North on my little 150 for Air Venture! It will be my first time and hopefully the first of many more!

If you don't plan to stay in Oshkosh the whole week, you should check the 150/152 flyin in Clinton, Iowa. www.cessna150152flyin.org

Nice. I was never able to make it when I had my 150.

What about ground transportation to the airport, pre-flight, ground transportation on the other end, etc.? I find that once I add those in, I am not really saving much time.

Of course, I am flying a slower plane, and live 25 minutes from my airport, give or take a few minutes.

My dad went and has some brochures from when it was in Rockford. Dad and I went twice back around 1980. Once in a Swift with only a Com and ADF. Again about 2 years later in a Twin Navion. Both times from the Dallas, TX area.
