Thirty years plus three weeks ago we set out from our Los Angeles-area home for a Caribbean cruise out of San Juan PR. Air travel was on Eastern.

Itinerary eastbound was LAX-ATL-SJU. The LAX-ATL A300 red-eye got diverted to Nashville because of fog in Atlanta. We landed at BNA just before dawn, and waited on board the airplane until someone could come out and open up the terminal.

We twiddled our thumbs in Nashville until wx allowed us to proceed to ATL for our connection to San Juan.

An Eastern L-1011 hauled us to SJU, where a motor coach was waiting to take us to the ship. We boarded with 20 minutes to spare before the ship sailed.

After the cruise we had to cross a mechanics' picket line in San Juan to board the L-1011 back to Atlanta. The airplane was late arriving at SJU, and we made a missed approach on the first try at ATL. So we were late for the connection back to L.A., but because there were a couple dozen other passengers from the same cruise also going to L.A., they held it for us.

On board the westbound A300 a fellow passenger asked a flight attendant for a pillow. She said they didn't have any. He mumbled a complaint, whereupon the FA whirled around and growled, "Sir, we waited two hours for you!" Without missing a beat he softly replied, "No ma'am ... you waited two hours for your airplane."

We landed at LAX in the middle of the night, 5 January 1991. Over the PA: "Welcome to Los Angeles. Thank you for flying Eastern Air Lines. When you make your future travel plans we hope you'll ... [pause] ... remember us."
