If any of you are looking to buy portable tie downs,( maybe for the Gaston's trip) You can buy the same screw in 15" anchors at a farm store,e.i Tractor Supply, Orschlens or MFA for $4.99 each. I also bought (2)15' 1800lbs straps for $10.95,total was less than $30.00. An identical set up through an aircraft supply store is over $55.00.
Just thought I would pass this on.

Scroll down to "tie out stake"

I got some similar to this from my local pet supply store.

Search "ground anchor". The 3" is the version you want; $4.95/anchor in units less than 12. This design has far superior pull out strength (1400#/anchor) versus the spiral "dog" type anchors. The only negative to this particular item is the 30" overall length which is a bit on the long side of desired. Shorter is available but I haven't found the source yet.

Ed,
The anchor I purchased was the 3" version, it is not the dog chain anchor. It is identical to the aviation anchor sold buy Sporty's and some other supply stores.

Go to a camping store. Buy the larger aluminum 9-10" pegs that are designed to be pounded into the round at a 45 degree angle. They're light, and hold tenaciously in soil, not quit so good in gravel. After all, these mountaineers don't want to get blown away in their tent as they sleep. Buy 3/8" New England Braid- 2400 pound pull or ~= 1G. Done.

Cool. If I didn't have a set now I'd run out to TSC (Tractor Supply Company) and see if they have them.

Y'all know full well these are not FAA-approved products, and not valid under the provisions of 'Owner-Manufactured parts'; I am calling the FAA on Tuesday morning!
:D
