Was looking at a METAR being displayed for Bettendorf IA from the DVN airport . . . and it showed Freezing Drizzle at -24C at about 11am their time this morning. The NWS office for the Quad Cities is located at that location, so I am assuming they are trained in interpreting what the equipment is telling them -

Damn. Freezing Drizzle [SLD?] at -24C? Is that even possible?

Dunno, I wouldn't think so, but the CIP was showing SLD at 1000 MSL over the Detroit area earlier today. Considering that the temp is -15C and dropping, I thought that was pretty unlikely too. Then again, there was a much warmer airmass in place until around 09Z last night... so again, dunno.

Temp inversion? I'm too lazy to look up the winds and temps aloft.

A tiny hint of an insignificant inversion and still damn cold.

Well at least the CAPE was 0. :D

I wasn't worried about the inversion - the discussions all were talking about really good mixing between 925mb and the surface -

I looked back and now cannot find the METAR - I know I saw it - maybe there was a mistake . . . do I hear Roseanne Roseannadanna out there in the background?

Wasn't is Emily Litella that said "nevermind" ?

Roseanne had another catchline I thought.

Maybe freezing fog?? Long shot but that's all I can think of.

The density altitude at our local class delta (KCGI) this morning was in the range of -4,000'

I was outside 60 miles away, and there was no SLD, not even frost. Weather was perfectly fine for walking and driving -- it was just cold and mostly sunny, with a few scattered low clouds.

The automated stations are marvelously good, on the whole, but I think the DVN station was tricked this time.
