Why would u not file a flight plan and get flight following is beyond me...

What's the availability of flight following across Alaska?

What would a VFR flight plan get him that he didn't get?
 
Will never know, may be he got into IMC, may be not. In any case, very sad and RIP

Not much flight following outside anchorage bowl, Kenia and Fairbanks. Flight plan would have given them a starting place to look. That's a stretch endurance wise.

No radar once you get away from Anchorage unless the flight is operated above 7 or 8,000.

Like Steven says (EDIT: And Zeldman) above and below, it's pretty much non-radar for the altitudes that a 172 would typically be at.

Lots of aircraft that operate in Alaska have extended fuel. There is a mod to put 18 gallons under the back seat in the 172.
did this one have it? who knows.
