    Cog Testing - Math Questions

...I can use a pen and paper but I won't be able to write anything down or a calculator. Is that normal for all COG exams? If I don't do that well on the math portion, will the FAA think poorly of me? I'm being tested by a HIMS neuropsych due to an ADHD diagnosis from elementary school. Thank you!

    Hims Psychiatrist Test

I went through the HIMs Standard Track for ADHD. Once completing that hurdle, I am now being referred to a HIMS Psych for an evaluation - one time anxiety problem in the past.

Fact or Fiction: FAA Continues to Remove Barriers/Reduce Stigma for Mental Illness in Pilots

I believe many pilots can be safe to fly, even with things like anxiety. Instead of years of effort being required to get an SI, the FAA needs to find an efficient way to figure out if pilots are safe to fly. And then communicate clearly what is needed to go down that pathway. Right now for...

Fact or Fiction: FAA Continues to Remove Barriers/Reduce Stigma for Mental Illness in Pilots

Barriers serve a purpose. Stigma is not an FAA concern.

Fact or Fiction: FAA Continues to Remove Barriers/Reduce Stigma for Mental Illness in Pilots

There’s more to this that the mechanics of flying. Someone with legit depression, anxiety, or ADHD might be inclined to skip a weather briefing, forget NOTAMs, ignore TFRs, fail to check fuel or oil, ignore a low tire or strut. In short, their illness inclines them toward less safety. The...

So is the fast track a special issuance or is it different than the old regular track SI?

Fact or Fiction: FAA Continues to Remove Barriers/Reduce Stigma for Mental Illness in Pilots

That is kind of what I was getting at. I think others here hit the nail on the head pretty well, its the process itself, not the results, that need to change. I don't think people are expecting the FAA to look at severe cases and try to get them to fly. But the process to a yes/no answer should...

Release from SI program for ADHD

My Dime: ADHD is not necessarily a child hood event, Guest. Not by a long shot. If one is fortunate and the frontal lobe skills develop (@ age 25 is where that stops, generally) then after multiple years (five is common) of advancing through the ratings, no accidents/incidents, no ATO...

Fact or Fiction: FAA Continues to Remove Barriers/Reduce Stigma for Mental Illness in Pilots

I feel like this thread has gotten a little off topic. OP asked about ADHD, anxiety, and depression, not psychosis. Besides, I cannot fathom letting someone with a history of psychosis fly an airplane without a lot of scrutiny. But to answer OP's original question, disagree. While it is true...

...ensnarled in a proverbial HEPA filter over insurance coding malfeasance, mishandled/overstated medical nothingburgers like the common cold (aka ADHD) or anything with the first syllable to the word anxiety on it, whether on purpose or by errata? I don't mean to dismiss the nuanced...

Fact or Fiction: FAA Continues to Remove Barriers/Reduce Stigma for Mental Illness in Pilots

Do you have data to support your first statement and what numeric value constitutes many? Statistically the values a quite low. The FAA has gone far enough in this area.

Fact or Fiction: FAA Continues to Remove Barriers/Reduce Stigma for Mental Illness in Pilots

That's clearly the FAA's current method. The problem is that they use a fine screen but then they don't have sufficient resources to sort out the particles efficiently. Currently, most of the applicants who get denied can eventually get certified with enough time and money.

Fact or Fiction: FAA Continues to Remove Barriers/Reduce Stigma for Mental Illness in Pilots

...by definition, yet people get therapy and medications and so bugger themselves with FAA Medical. That said, anyone who’s been on antipsychotics is worthy of close scrutiny. Let’s not give them the benefit of the doubt created by over-diagnosis and over-treatment of depression, anxiety, or ADHD.

Release from SI program for ADHD

...all the money to pursue professional pilot career and in effect the FAA is keeping you on a leash with their attitude of "will wait and see if we renew your SI." In the FAA's eyes, "As with pedophilia having no cure, even if ADHD was a childhood event, it may pop up anytime during your...

The trouble is finding an AME that won’t defer you even when you have everything for the Fast Track ready ahead of time. All I have found around here defer still. It’s super frustrating.

Fact or Fiction: FAA Continues to Remove Barriers/Reduce Stigma for Mental Illness in Pilots

Clearly, many pilots are frustrated with the FAA's policy on history of mental health conditions (primarily ADHD & depression/anxiety). But there have been many changes in the last few years that seem to be removing barriers and reducing stigma in the area of mental health. A few examples: *...

    Been diagnosed with ADHD

Last fall, the FAA just created a new ADHD 'Fast Track' pathway for pilots who meet 2 specific criteria: 1. No history of other psychiatric/mental health condition (anxiety, depression, PTSD, substance use disorder, etc...) 2. No treatment or symptoms for 4 or more years. If you meet these...
