    Aviation Safety Magazine?

I do. It’s one of the better magazines. In general, the less-flashy magazines are way better than the Plane & Pilot or Flying type. IFR, Aviation Safety, type club mags, etc.

NA - All wheel drive car and replacing tires

Tire Rack offers a ‘shaving’ service to get the new tire down to matching the old ones. Yes, you lose half the life off the new one but it beats buying four.

Which tool brand is best for occasional use?

A reasonable plan is to buy Harbor Freight, and anything you use often enough to break or be irritated by the quality, replace that single piece with something expensive like SnapOn.

Show me your bags and sacks

What kind of stuff are you carrying around in those bags? How much do you actually use? Seems like a whole lot of stuff.

    Becoming a ground school instructor

Are you clicking the button to read the explanations? Most of them are pretty good. Regardless, the point is to ace the written. You can easily score in the high 90s after a couple of days of study and then do whatever you like to learn the material in-depth.

Help me decide where to crash

I debated this a lot flying out of M01 in Memphis. The options are basically trees, small and people-filled park, or the Mississippi River. It seemed like the best plan was the river near shore, or a sandbar if the river stage happened to be low.

What is the best way to study for the Instrument Written Test?

The banks are no longer public and haven’t been for a while, but Sheppard pays a bounty (refunds your fee) if you provide them with any new or changed questions you come across on your actual test. That keeps it very close to perfectly accurate.

    No more EAA written discount

I took a couple of written exams yesterday (AGI and FIA) and was told by PSI/CATS that they no longer have a discount for EAA members. Has anyone else been told this recently? I got the same operator both times I called so it could just be that she was misinformed. I’ve emailed EAA requesting...

Tell us your best courtesy car story!

Not an earth-shattering story, but when I was 18 I flew a Sundowner from Arkansas to Idaho and back. Spent the night Sidney NE, where the old guy (well, he was old to an 18-year-old) put my plane in the hangar overnight for free due to thunderstorms inbound, and tossed me the keys to their crown...

FAA writtens are full of outdated, inaccurate, and irrelevant information. Get Sheppard and pass the test. Then dive into deeper publications to actually understand the details of what you need to know.
