    IFR is so nice

Are you getting the expected clearance? That allows you to look at the u familiar names and spellings. You can get them from Foreflight or FlightPlan.com. Alan

Getting "punished" for daring to file direct?

Are you aware of the previously cleared routes source? Available from FltPlan.com and FF. That is your best bet of not getting surprised by a clearance in a new airport. Not fulproof but seems to work most of the time. Alan

In the process of getting my PPL, some help please

Location is a pretty big deal. The average in the SF Bay Area is 90+ hours. The complex airspace takes a lot more time to learn and the CFI can't let you out on your own nearly as soon vs being out in Montana or some other very quiet area. And you have to add another 40-50 hours of ground...

    Rude Call from AOPA Foundation

I'm going to take the other side. There is no support for GA and especially the little ga in Washington other than AOPA. Like all lobbying efforts it's very tough to calculate an ROI. But it's cheap insurance. I also support the ASF. I really like the work they do. GA accidents rates are...

Foreflight Question about linking iPad to Garmin 530

The Flightstream 210 is the only product that has flight plan connectivity. The 210 is $995 plus installation which runs 8-10 hours. So total cost is north of $2K. It is really useful IF you fly complex routes, airways with lots of turns, SID's and STAR's. Alan

    OSH 2014 -- Who's In?

I'm arriving Friday before the show from SF Bay Area. Will be there all week. Love to watch the arrivals on Saturday and Sunday before the show starts. Alan

    Lets talk Thunderstorms

So is there any good rules like stay atleast X miles from a cell over X size , Don't cross between cells that are yellow or red? stuff like that? Google Dr. William Stahle. He is the person who put together the technology that became XM Weather. He has published a series of guidelines for...

Sacramento to east AZ -- general considerations

Easy way. Go down to the LA/Palmdale area in the afternoon and then get going early the next am which should allow you plenty of time to get through before the monsoon TS get started. The monsoon season is really hard to predict this far out bit making it a day and a half trip is much more...

    Sacramento to KAPA

One more suggestion. Move your stop from Ogden to Evanston, just over the hills. Reason: it will save you a tough climb out of Ogden. The mountains are right on top of you and you will have to circle to get to a safe altitude. I had my oil temp alarm go off during the climb. After that...

    Partnerships…

I am not a lawyer but in CA it was strongly recommended that we use an LLC for a partnership. It does protect you from liability issues created by your partners. Does nothing for you. I've never heard about a 135 issue. Our partnership clearly states the goal is to use the plane for personal...

    Upgrading to a faster plane

Without an instrument rating, you are not going to come close to doing those trips. My recommendation would be the put your money into the instrument rating, first, then worry about the faster plane. A 125kt plane is still faster than driving which is what you will be doing w/o the rating.

    Garmin 430W question on approaches

The training from my CFI was never, ever use VTF. There is no benefit and it can really screw you up.

Is it that hard to get the 430 database updated on time?

You are right about the time now that I think about it. I recently got a new writer from Jepp as part of the Mac beta program. It does go much faster. The fleet issue management is still an issue but a faster writer sure helps. Alan

Is it that hard to get the 430 database updated on time?

It takes me about 15 min per card. The real problem for any one managing a fleet is that it can take hours if you have 15 - 20 planes. You really have to have multiple computers. And if you don't have extra cards (which run $160 each) you have to run back and forth to each plane twice. And...

How do I request an LPV approach

I've never seen an LP or L/VNAV approach. I have the impression that the latter is only available to planes that have higher end equipment, I.e. found on transport planes. Is this correct? I have dual Garmin 430W's. Can I fly an LP approach if I find one? Alan

How do I request an LPV approach

Just monitor your GPS unit to see what type of GPS/RNAV approach it is annunciating. On the Garmins it will show LPV or VNAV or VNAV+ (which is a unique Garmin function that creates an artificial glide slope that you can fly but only to the MDA mins.). All come from the generic GPS/RNAV RW XX...
