What is the most fun "Aviation tool/gear" you've purchased?

I got a dual time/GMT watch two years ago. It saves a lot of mental flip flopping at work and when I fly. It's nothing fancy, but it gets the job done.

    Avionics Shop in MI

I think I've found a solution. There's 1/3 of a plane for sale that has all the good stuff installed already. Thanks again for all the help, here. --Matt

Asking for Advice on GPS Nav

For what it's worth, I just got two quotes to install a Garmin 175 in Michigan. One was for $9200 and that used an existing indicator. A second quote was for $13,200 and that included a Garmin NAV/GPS indicator.

Asking for Advice on GPS Nav

I'd go with a 175 as well. It's so much easier to use. Ive used both. The 430 was great when it was new, and the 175 is the same leap forward that the 430 was twenty years ago. --Matt

What's the deal with CFII's that don't want to fly IMC?

I'll bet a lot of CFIIs don't have much actual experience. I'm up for a checkride soon, and my logbook still shows a paltry 1.0 in the "Actual IMC" column. So, that means that for now my minimums will be pretty high, just below VMC, basically. My intention is to communicate that clearly to a...

    Avionics Shop in MI

I'm looking to put a Garmin 175 and an Autopilot in a Mooney. I've got one quote from a shop near Jackson, MI, but I can't get other shops to return my calls at the moment. I'd like to get another quote, just to have two quotes. Does anyone have any experience with avionics in Michigan, or...

    Hand held radios.

Yep. Get something that has an alkaline battery pack. Then buy a spare. Put the Energizer lithiums in both and call it good. I have one, but I kinda like the direct jacks on the sportys radios. The buttons on sportys are huge as well, that's probably a good safety feature.

It sounds like you did a lot of preparation and it really helped. Nice job!

    182T rental price

That price seems like a lot, but it's probably pretty reasonable. If that's the plane you're going to fly after you get your ticket, then it's good to train in.

    First aviation headset- choice?

I'm a notorious cheapskate. I bought a Lightspeed QFR back when I was a pilot. I skrimped and saved and bought some Oregon Aero ear seals later on. Saving money and penny pinching is a lifestyle for me. That being said, if o was just starting out, knowing what I know now....I'd buy a...

Hold on to yer hats …

I googled it because I was curious. RM ZMAFD. Remarks: Miami Center (ZMA) Flight Data (probably the radar position putting in the prep.) Controllers get "credit" for getting Pireps.

Why are Cessna Skymasters not liked? Or are they?

I had the same thoughts about buying a 337 as the OP. It looked like a great deal, and had all kinds of new avionics, and twin engine redundancy. The seller of the one I was looking at talked me out of it, more or less. He said that annuals are 12-15k. A buddy of mine that flew them said...

    Jetliner wake turbulence

I used to do pipeline patrol. There's a fuel line up the east side of KMDW that runs north to the river that I used to patrol. I got a lot closer than "miles". Seemed safe at the time. It probably wasn't, but I'd go for standard book separation now. --Matt

    Current loan rates

I got a quote over the summer. 15-20% down, 5.5%, on a 15 year term. There is $600 in closing/appraisal and a $300 title search as well. The email was dated July 2022. --Matt

    Renter's Insurance?

I went with Avemco. I think it was significantly cheaper than the other providers, but I can't remember exactly.

    Do you tip your CFI?

I tried to tip the kid a few bucks on my last BFR a month ago. He just credited it to the next lesson.... --Matt
