Voluntary (calcium) heart scan - what am I risking?

Coronary CT / Ca Score testing has been around for awhile, but only recently became affordable for patients paying out of pocket. 50 yo male with family history is the target population for this study. An elevated score doesn’t necessarily mean you have Coronary Disease. If the score is...

    Lasik surgery in 2002

it’s a surgery. I just saw a young SP last week, he had had LASIK a month before. he passed the vision testing easily, wasn’t having any glare / halos / irritation / etc and had been released by his eye doc. we had the eye doctor fill out an 8500-7 and that was attached to his 8500-8. but he...

    Lasik surgery in 2002

hmm, interesting. I’m not familiar with how it works on the employer side, I‘d think their concern would be that the pilot had an appropriate valid certificate, and then the details for any SODA, revocation or denial. I can’t imagine an AME being concerned that an applicant omitted an elective...

    Lasik surgery in 2002

your surgery was 21 yrs ago, you obviously meet the vision standards if you're currently flying, just add it under 18X on your next, and subsequent, applications. NBD

    Denied from 3rd Class?

you’re not “declined,” they would “deny” you if they determined you didn't meet the medical standards. If they got your package 10/23 I can guarantee the reports haven’t even been scanned into your file yet. The “not medically cleared” part is just to remind you that your certificate hasnt...

    Single instance of motion sickness

I wouldn't worry about it, they’re looking for people who have to take medication every time they get into a car, go out on a boat, take a flight, etc. If you have no issues flying / instructing and you don’t have further problems between now and your next Class 1, I wouldn’t even mention it on...

    Vision changes

the standard for Class 3 distant and near Is 20/40. FAA doesn't care whether you wear glasses / contacts or not. All of the individual vision limitations are no more and have been replaced with: “Must Use Corrective Lens(es) to meet vision standards at all required distances” so if you get...

    Reporting STDs

no need to report those antibiotics if you’ve finished or will have finished by the time you do your application / exam. If you want to list the telehealth visit just say “UTI, treated with antibiotics, resolved”

    time since heart attack+stent?

to summarize the link above, the FAA will want the records from your event in 2011, including hospital records and cath images and stent details, a current detailed report from your treating physician, blood work and a new maximal stress test. the stress test requirements are very specific and...

Anyone know about 1st class medicals with Gilbert’s Syndrome?

Gilbert’s is not a disqualifying condition but it doesn’t cause abdominal pain. Your AME will want to review your work up and see how your doc came to that diagnosis. You could have Gilbert’s and something else causing the symptoms or you may have a different issue all together. Knowing your...

    Switch from 14v to 28v with a 14/28v navigator (KMD150)?

I’m hoping to upgrade my panel next year but in the meantime, my KMD150 has become unreadable due to the screen deteriorating. I’ve found an affordable replacement, the 150’s are listed as 14/28v but I’m curious since it’s coming out of a 14v airplane if anything has to be done to the unit...

is there a link to what the Fast Track FAA ADHD Summary is? And how it compares to the Standard Track FAA ADHD Evaluation Report and Testing Specifications?

Made a mistake on medxpress application....

if you haven’t had the actual exam yet, just wait until then and ask the AME to add it. If you already had the exam and the application has been submitted, and the omitted visit was a simple wellness check, I’d just drop it since it was mentioned in your previous application, and list it next...

    Atrial Flutter/sleep apnea

her AHR was 9.5? how much did she desaturate (drop her oxygen level)? If she had Af then it’s important to rule out sleep apnea. If she‘s a good sleeper, then a lab test would probably be a worthwhile approach, if nothing more than for a 2nd opinion. If she indeed has SA, even mild...

    False Accusations

is her “ex” in the aviation field? most of the non flying public doesn’t know the hotline exists. her accident must have happened after her last Medical. the FAA asks for everything, its standard to ask for EMS records and hospital admission and discharge summaries, etc., even though the...

    Basic Med

one of the “pros” of BM was “who knows you better than your PCP?” sadly a lot of docs now are employees of hospitals, corporations, multi specialty groups and the administration sets the rules, perhaps they see it as increased liability, or maybe they’re too busy making money to think about it...

    Older pilots and basic med

I suspect it’s not “medical incapacitation” but general “pilot error” for lack of a better phrase. IDK the statistics for “damages paid” with pilot error events, but I assume it’s a lot more than for the occasional pilot incapacitation. TBH, I think “medical” causes for aircraft accidents are...

    Older pilots and basic med

Not an FAA policy, but an insurance “thing”. I see pilots every day, couple weeks ago saw an 80 yo CFII, was instructing in her Warrior under BM. She and her younger husband bought a V35 and insurance company said if she wants to fly it she needs an ANNUAL C3. i see lots of older pilots flying...

Initial 3rd class medical - not a full disclosure

So why did the AME have to complete the ME application for you? Normally the pilot does it, gives the confirmation number to the AME, the AME pulls it out “of the Cloud” and begins the exam. The AME can make changes to it, certifying that he has your permission to do so, but him actually going...

Deferred application approved. How to renew?

If there’s no NVA (not valid after) date on your certificate, and there’s no Special Issuance Authorization then it’s a standard issue. Good work, your next renewal should be a piece of cake. Upgrading to a C1 shouldn’t be a problem either.
