Why is the CAP so understaffed?

As a 40-year member (Cadet, Senior Member, then sustaining for the final 10 years in NJ wing...) of the organization...you're not far off. Typically, the planes in the wing were based close to where the wing pilots were domiciled...and trying to get time in them was challenging, to say the...

    Buying a Baron for Training

IMHO, the latter is most often the reason. We use all sorts of weasel words to justify why. We do it because we want to. No shame in that.

    Planeless

Car in the photo: complete strip, body work, repaint in '09...$10K. And that is for a fiberglass body, which, while it won't rot or corrode...still needs a lot of finishing work. Shooting color is the easy part (relatively speaking). Prep is where you spend the money.

Foreigner woman - Private pilot license

Est-ce qu'ils parlent anglais là-bas ? Demander pour un ami.. (en tant que franco-canadien... excusez ma grammaire)

    Who gets to name fixes?

Of course, as a lifelong Bosox fan, used to the moaning and constant whining about the boys of Fenway...this, on V1 on the way into Boston:

Taking my daughter flying for the first time this weekend

If success is measured in the small steps we take forward...then I think you rocked that one. The smile is precious. The memory will last a lifetime (for both of you...) Congrats!

    Who gets to name fixes?

Back in '01 or so...we had a Chief Pilot who went west in his sleep one night...was the local DPE, did phase checks (when the school was 141), and was just one of those "quiet birdmen" who had more hours in his log, certs all the way from ASEL to multi rotorcraft...a real pilot's pilot...

Leaded gas and the EPA...here it comes

Actually, if we rescinded the amendment that called for the direct "popular" election of the Senate, it would restore the balance of power as intended in the founding documents; the Senate was intended to be the balance on the lower house elected by the population by being appointed by the state...

Airtex, local hot rod shop or...?

8 weeks is nothing. Try 24 weeks to get delivery of a DC One headphone (with LEMO plug) from the factory. Things are just taking longer, and between raw material shortages, plant shutdowns due to gov't heavyhandedness or excess of caution or half the shop floor out ill or in isolation, lack of...

Looking for decent Heading Indicator for PA-32

I have an NSD360 non-slaved vacum HSI with an 8130 (a little over 18 mos since it was overhauled) that was removed for a G5 upgrade.

    Descent Rate on Glide Slope

Amen. In VFR, it should ALL be sight picture, and minor power/pitch adjustments as needed WITHOUT having to stare at gauges. It's not a swiss watch, it's an airplane. Downwind (in a strut-wing cessna...which most students are using): Runway 1/2 to 2/3 out the strut. At 1000' agl that is...

Did someone say Group Buy? Knots2U

I'd be interested in split strut cuffs. Mine are way past their 'use by' date.

    Paint my plane

ORIGINAL. Classic, classy, and really fits the style! Just IMHO, but original is always a treat to see on the ramp.

    Questions to ask perspective CFII???

The instructional balancing act: how far do you let the student go...your phraseology says it perfectly. Far enough that YOU get the vivid point, but not so far that I'm trying to duck tape sections of the fuselage back together while our hair is on fire and the VSI is pegged at -5K FPM...

    Cessna 172M 40 degree flaps

MCA in a 152 into a 50kt headwind...and you WILL be going backwards. Scares the heck out of students the first time you demonstrate it....but really reinforces the concept of relative wind.
