IMHO, the latter is most often the reason. We use all sorts of weasel words to justify why. We do it because we want to. No shame in that.

Amen. In VFR, it should ALL be sight picture, and minor power/pitch adjustments as needed WITHOUT having to stare at gauges. It's not a swiss watch, it's an airplane. Downwind (in a strut-wing cessna...which most students are using): Runway 1/2 to 2/3 out the strut. At 1000' agl that is...

MCA in a 152 into a 50kt headwind...and you WILL be going backwards. Scares the heck out of students the first time you demonstrate it....but really reinforces the concept of relative wind.
