Spark plug rotation and torque spec

Beam type torque wrenches do not meet industry specs, thus are not legally calibratable. My Snap On was built to meet an industry spec and has been legally certified as meeting those specs many times. I know which I would trust. YMMV

    Why does the breaker pop?

Ever wonder why good/expensive pots and pans have copper bottoms? They transfer heat well. Copper also transfers electrons very well. A bad switch or circuit breaker can transfer the heat generated down the copper bus bar to another spot. Look for the hot spot.

Unbelievable Offduty Delta Mechanic notices GA Maintenance Issue from the Ground

The incandescent gets the colour from the lens, not the lamp. An LED gets the colour from the LED itself and not the lens. A coloured lens with a coloured LED' even the same colour, is not desirable. I don't recall exactly what aspect gets degraded (colour, brightness, general happiness)...

    Self-locking screws reusable?

In other Lycomings, do they call out a separate bolt and washer? Has Lycoming been contacted and asked about this issue? Has an engine shop been asked how they deal with this kind of hardware? It is a good question. I once discussed rusted and worn out hardware on a rental turbine engine. Of...

    Self-locking screws reusable?

I do, as required. If the bolt call out has a wire hole in the head, it gets safetied. Cheap and easy to preflight.

    Self-locking screws reusable?

I didn't realize that there was a star lock washer under the head. As Bell206 mentioned, that screw relies on the locking action of the washer. And those screws hold the oil filter adapter in place. For less than $50, I would replace them. Cheap insurance.

    Self-locking screws reusable?

Check with Lycoming. An oil filter adapter sounds like a critical installation. What is keeping the engine oil in the engine worth to you?

Flap track replacement on a cessna

How much sheetmetal experience do you have? Who are you expecting to certify this work? This job can get messy if not done well.

Engine noise on COM1 but not COM2?

Does it do it with just the master on and the engine not running? Different head set? Different jacks? What other items are running that can be turned off to see if they affect the radio. One of my first go to's is to "re-rack" the box. Just the action of moving the box often clears up issues...

How do you mitigate the risks of mechanic error?

https://tc.canada.ca/en/aviation/reference-centre/airworthiness-notices/airworthiness-notices-c010-edition-2-10-october-2001 This is how control system errors are mitigated here in Canada. Does it fix everything? Nope, there are still errors made, but I am sure it is better than nothing. When...

    1965 C-150 Pre-Buy Result

If you open an inspection panel that is not meant for pilot pre-flight purposes, the work is technically considered maintenance and requires a maintenance release. It doesn't always happen.

    Q: Marvel Schebler Economizer/Enrichment

I just saw this thread and I mentioned this system in the maintenance thread about going full rich for landing. Small world! The economizer system leans fuel flow automatically at less than full throttle. Or enrichens fuel flow at full throttle. Supposedly, from max throttle, if you pull...

    Full Rich for landing?

Good discussion. One thing not mentioned so far is fuel enrichment at full power. Carbs and fuel injection have extra fuel added at full throttle to aid in cooling and prevent detonation.

Lost a cowl flap on a 182. Tips to prevent this in the future?

I can't agree more. Every aircraft design has a multitude of compromises in it. Cessna did not design aircraft for unlimited lives. They wanted it to perform a certain job to a certain degree, while being easy and cheap to manufacture. Notice ease of maintenance is missing? :) Hopefully the OP...

    Shade tree mechanic strikes again

I get that. Done that many a time. You find something installed and have to educate the owner why it is bad and why he has to spend $$ to get something that was considered acceptable to be more acceptable. Kind of like finding a tywrap on an engine mount and telling Mr Owner why it is bad and...
