    Visual Approach Obstacle Clearance

All helpful information - thank you all for the education. To answer the questions: The altitude and position came from the track log on flight aware. I also saw it on iPhone GPS with ForeFlight. It was a night flight. The controller did not give a safety alert as per ATC archives.

    Visual Approach Obstacle Clearance

Merry Christmas all! I'm an instrument rated private pilot and just landed as a passenger on an airline flight to KBIS. There was a scenario in the flight that made me wonder. There are two towers that are about 1 mile apart and are 3392 MSL and 3425 MSL (so the towers are about 1200ft tall)...

    Throttle Adjustment Effort

I see a lot of responses like this. The assumption is that you either need to pay top dollar for everything or you can't afford to own an aircraft. I just had to replace my wastegate. Through Lycoming that part is $7,500. I worked with my mechanic and found another part for $1,500 that was a...

    Throttle Adjustment Effort

I just got my Turbo Lance back from it's annual. It needed to have it's wastegate replaced. Then I flew it across the country to a place with 2000ft less elevation. All of a sudden the engine was idling at 1500RPM. I had a mechanic take it in to adjust, thinking it would be maybe an hour or...

    T-Tail Lance Approach Speed

Yeah, best value you can get in a 6 seater, as long as you have enough runway. All the airports around here are a mile long, so we're plenty good.

    T-Tail Lance Approach Speed

As an update for anybody that's interested, I had a chance to test out what happens in landing configuration at a lower airspeed ( 85kts, still 1.67 Vs0) when light (about 750lbs under gross). Basically the nose gets really heavy, and it requires a ton of trim to keep the nose up. Based on how...

    T-Tail Lance Approach Speed

Appreciate everybody's responses, experience, and knowledge. Yeah it doesn't float too much at heavy weights, it mostly floats when I'm light. It's compounded by the fact that my home airport is at 4,234 feet, and uses a 3.5 degree glide slope, so it doesn't slow as quickly when pulling power...

    T-Tail Lance Approach Speed

The lightest I would ever fly is 850lbs under gross. Sounds like it would be safe to try somewhere between 85-95kts. 85kts at 2750lbs and 95kts ant 3600. Something like that. Obviously, when I'm heavy it doesn't float nearly as much.

    T-Tail Lance Approach Speed

Found a related post: http://www.piperforum.com/showthread.php?t=5546 The poster says: "So in order to deal with it a good rule of thumb that I have used over the years is to fly the downwind at 110kts., base at 100 and final at 85-95 depending on weight. 1.3 x vso at gross is 79.3 kts. so...

    T-Tail Lance Approach Speed

It's very controllable, but clearly not ready to land yet. I haven't tried to land at a lower speed than the normal recommended (also what I was trained on), but I wonder if you start to lose elevator authority. I also wonder if the the really high speed is related to an overabundance of...

    T-Tail Lance Approach Speed

The manual for a P32RT-300T (T-Tail Turbo Piper Lance) seems to recommend a very high final approach speed (95 KIAS normal technique, and 76 KIAS short field technique). I've landed following the manual instructions for normal technique, probably 50 times, and it floats 1500-2000 feet (at...

    Caution Wake Turbulence

A few weeks back I was doing a VFR transition at KSLC in my PA32. ATC assigned me an altitude and a "suggested heading", and then told me "caution wake turbulence". Normally you transition over either end of the runways depending on wind direction, but there was other traffic, so ATC sent me...

    Aircraft Painting in SLC Area

I am looking to have my 1978 Piper Lance II painted. Any recommendations? I would consider bringing it to a different shop regionally, but local to the SLC area would be ideal. I would like a balance of quality and value. I would like a good quality job 7-8/10, but would not want to pay...

    SFO Bravo VFR Transition Advice

Thanks for the response. I'm using Foreflight, so don't have a paper TAC. I did find a Flyway planning chart that just says how to go around and under. For some airports Foreflight has a TAC supplement, but not SFO. Anyway, I'll just plan on going under the air space unless somebody else...

    SFO Bravo VFR Transition Advice

Hey all. I've read that there is a common North-South transition along 101 flying mid field of SFO. However, I'm planning on flying to Half Moon Bay in a couple weeks and would need to transition from the East. I see there is about a 1.5 mile coordidor where I could fly under SFO and SJC...

Checkride in Complex / High Performance Airplane

Yeah, I've soloed for some landings, done dual cross-country, power-on stalls, power-off stalls, steep turns, all the radio / ATC communication. Basically just need night flying and flying only by reference to instruments. Based on all the advise, I think I'll stick with the 172 for my 20...

Checkride in Complex / High Performance Airplane

Yeah, as far as insurance, it's just plain expensive in this plane in general, for any low time pilot. As a student vs new private pilot I think it was only about 10% higher. Not much savings until 500 hr IFR pilot according to the agent. Sounds like more votes for completing in the 172...
