    Preferred route update

Make sure you read the routes offered - it may just be me - but most of the routes offered are Jet routes - which may not always be appropriate....

    Thoughts on the multi

Perhaps slightly more convenient than the West Coast. A Turbo 206 for rent in North Carolina for $120 dual and $149 solo. So yes they are out there. http://www.flightgest.com

    Did we lose Mr. Levy?

Ron is big in the Grumman community, there is some kind of annual Grumman meeting going on I think (I'm on the mailing list, but I sort of skim it so I can't say I'm totally clear on the details). I bet Ron is probably busy and maybe doesn't have access.

    Filing IFR, another question

It depends. You can always call for your clearance and tell them you're not ready and you'll call them back when you are ready. Which I think might achieve what you want - but means 2 phone calls. The advantage of that is you can call from the FBO the first time and take your sweet time figuring...

    P-Baron thoughts

Ah well yes - it's a good job we have the PTS for standardisation otherwise..... I think my Private and Instrument were by the book - but they were a) a long time ago and b) I was young, naive and foolish. Since then I've taken 6 checkrides, I've ALWAYS been asked for something not in the PTS...

    P-Baron thoughts

Eh? Are you discussing steep turns and the bank angle or did I miss something? The commercial is 50 degrees, the ATP is 45. No PTS requires a 60 degree bank that I know of.

Guys, where do you carry your medical cert?

I guess I've never seen it as a problem to laminate it and then fold it. I can see if you used the thick kind of laminate that doesn't bend, but the stuff I've always used either goes through a small machine to be heated or is just sticky plastic you can buy at an office supply store.

Guys, where do you carry your medical cert?

Oh I'm going to hate myself in the morning, but.... You could laminate your medical certificate.

    Modest Proposal -- Delete 14CFR61.51(e)(3)

I agree with your goal. However - to achieve it FIRST we need an alternative way for people to build time, because paying for the first 250 hours is expensive, if people had to pay for the first 1200 who knows who could afford to make that happen. Which ultimately leads to a pilot shortage...

    Modest Proposal -- Delete 14CFR61.51(e)(3)

Yeeeees, but they still want the same people, with the same experience, so they'll just drop the PIC requirement and perhaps replace it by a "dual given". They're not idiots. The only reason to stop CFI's logging PIC is so that they can't qualify for things under the regulations. Everybody...

    Modest Proposal -- Delete 14CFR61.51(e)(3)

I'm missing something. Why do you think CFI's are trying to build PIC time? All the "time builders" are trying to do is meet the Part 135 IFR requirements to act as PIC - there's no mention of a PIC time requirement, it's all just pilot time. So people with a Commercial and a CFI are still...

    Need some organization suggestions...

Have you tried categorizing things into: URGENT and IMPORTANT URGENT and NOT IMPORTANT NOT-URGENT and IMPORTANT NOT-URGENT and NOT IMPORTANT This can sometimes help you figure out if your job is possible. For example, if 10 hours a day of your work falls into URGENT and IMPORTANT then you're...

    Hard and soft IFR

Some time ago, somewhere else, I suggested that pilots with an instrument rating could choose to fly only in "soft IFR". That this was perhaps a good idea for people who didn't fly IMC all that often and didn't feel fully proficient - and that an approach to a ceiling of 1,000ft was less risky...

    What's a hot start?

It's black magic - lot's of people have their sure-fire absolutely always works on all kinds of engines for starting them hot, and for them it is, but when other people try to replicate it it never works - who knows why. That's why you can find almost as many ways to start a hot engine as you...

    Night Currency

Let me tell you the tale of the pilot out to regain his night currency who did just that in calm winds. Takeoff, climb out, turn 180, land. The rollout was short, but it took a helluva lot of power to taxi - 'nuff said.

    Run up and mag check

So I agree with the other posters - a mag can fail or plugs load up at any time. Same with the prop. controls etc. So before every flight seems good to me. I believe people who fly a lot and often (not the same thing, but close) can deal with the added risk of rolling mag checks etc. I'm not...

    VFR over-the-top

You won't find a rule that says you can do it. The trick is you will NOT find a rule that says you can't. A lot of the "regulations" are like that. If it's not restricted then it's permitted.

Practical Advice to Avoid what happen in Washinton

It's all mostly conjecture - but if I had to guess the two buffons (OK, the one buffon and the student) knew exactly where they were. They were trying pass between Dulles and National below 3,000 feet - which pre-ADIZ was a sort of VFR corridor so you didn't have to traipse all the way around to...

    grass strip landings?

The exposure on grass strips is higher for a number of reasons. Rougher, tend to be shorter, tend to be surrounded by trees etc. So sometimes it's the FBO implementing it's own risk management, sometimes it's the insurance company (and yes, sometimes it really is, like for us). FBO's have...
