Furnace Creek L06 in Death Valley runway PIREP anyone?

Thanks for the PIREP and pictures. It's been advertised as much worse than that. Apprexiate the picts. Was there any wildflower action from all the rains?

Furnace Creek L06 in Death Valley runway PIREP anyone?

No Pirep, but please share yours when you get back. I'm very curious about the state of the runway.

Letter to the FAA re Digital Clock for IFR

My first question when I see people doing things like sending this letter to the FAA: What problem does it solve? My second thought:

    Hangar as an investment?

Interesting question that I'm about to find an answer to. We live in California and rent a hangar at San Jose International. However, my recently graduated son has decided to live in New Hampshire. He loves New England, has a job in NH, and is getting married next year to his long term...

    So many jokes..

I got some info from a friend of the owner. The plane is on the the rental list at Advantage Aviation. Evidently the thief tried to steal a plane adjacent to the one that was stolen -- covers and tie downs removed, but that plane had a dead battery. The thief then moved on to N446AC, removed...

    Starter not disengaged

I wouldn't fly until a mechanic has diagnosed the problem. What would concern me is that somehow the starter was engaged when you last flew the plane. Questions I would be asking are, how did the starter get engaged after or during last shutdown? Did that occur somehow while the engine was...

I saw what you did there. :) Or more correctly - I was there and I saw what you did.

Cozy mark iv down near half moon bay

Taking off from Half Moon Bay at night pretty much requires using one's instruments even if severe clear. My wife and I did that one night, took off from 30, turned left towards the water (and away from the hills). I was ready for it, but wow there were no visual cues at all. Everything in front...

Being based at an airport that doesn’t sell fuel?

Sure about that? Raising the gear before landing will guarantee at least one gear up! :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

Do you regularly run tanks (aux) dry?

Yes, I run tanks dry on long cross country flights. I don't want to end up in a situation with a little bit of fuel in multiple tanks. My Viking has 3 tanks: Left main, right main, and Aux. The mains in the wings each have 34.5 gal usable, and the aux tank between the rear seat and the baggage...

    Teach me about prop dings

Are you sure that' a scratch and not a bug carcass? Maybe try cleaning it off, perhaps with a scotch pad? I've seen similar things on the back of my prop which cleaned right off with a little elbow grease.

Because all software sucks. . .

True words. And just wait till you get SW managers trying to apply "agile" to Hardware development. Oh my goodness. Grrr. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Pro

    Premature Solo?

I agree the controller did a great job. I don't think the instructor added any value, and I personally do think that the young student would have benefited from hearing her familiar instructor's voice saying the same sort if things that the instructor (hopefully) used to say while sitting next...

GNS530W Terrain card seems to be dead

I'm on my third terrain card for my 430 since 2012. Same symptoms. The previous cards just died. I feel your pain.

    Premature Solo?

Wow. Great job by the controller. Kinda interesting to hear the instructor, however. I think I would be doing a lot more of "remember what you learned", "you're doing great", "you got this", "pitch for airspeed", "power for altitude", "looking good", "you can do this" sort of thing. And maybe...

When to know when to quit...or at least take a long hiatus

You'll ALWAYS be a pilot. And you can/should take pride in that. I got my Private in 1989, moved to California, started my career, started a family, etc., and ended up not flying for 20+ years, getting back into it in 2011. I still was a pilot during that time. My sister hasn't flown since...

I suspect I know to whom you're referring. Great guy, and it seems like he knows almost everyone, and everyone knows him.

Holy Crap, my house is in ForeFlight

Not my house, but somewhat related. My airplane is (currently) showing up in the Apple maps sat view of the airport on Catalina Island (KAVX). It's the blue and yellow plane in the center of the pic. Must have been taken a couple of years ago when we flew down for lunch and a hike. Someday...

New MSFS2024 announced - waiting on details

Maybe take some lessons in an actual plane instead? Wonder if anyone in the history of forever got an aviation career by showing the hiring person their Microsoft flight sim experience?
