    Cessna 162 low price?

The 162 I rent doesn't have SVT and goes for $120/hr wet. Coincidentally, Martha Lunken gives a short (negative) opinion on the SkyCatcher in the December 2014 issue of Flying. Something I note from hearing others experiences is that the QC on the SkyCatcher must be lacking. The one I...

    Cessna 162 low price?

I've got a 100 hours in a 162. I wouldn't buy one at $70k. Get it down to $40k and I'd consider it. I don't have a problem renting one to punch holes in the sky. The useful load is so low it's basically solo only. Reliability has been an issue with the one I rent relative to the number of...

    Your latest verified greaser

The verified part is the tough one. Just over a year ago for me. I flew out to Gaston's with my sister and brother-in-law. My sister was in flight training at the time. We took a DA40 and while I'm comfortable in it I only had about 8 hours in them at the time. I've been into Gaston's many...

    Stratus 2

I got it for the weather and potential for traffic. It works GREAT. Then I saw a pop-up TFR along my route one time. It wasn't right on my flight path, but maybe 10 miles off to one site. It was not in my preflight briefing. I won't say that I won't fly without it, but I sure try to bring...

    Cable cutters step inside

I cut cable and went to OTA about 2008. I've been running some form of DVR since about 2001, so lots of little diy projects as standards changed, but I'm happy.

    Polarized Lenses?

At the flight school where I learned, they were adamant about not wearing polarized sunglasses for flight (and this was before glass cockpits were common in GA). They said it was so you could more readily see reflections off of other aircraft. So, even today I have have my non-polarized flying...

    Foreflight 6.5 available

I like the resolution update on my iPhone 6. Looking forward to using the NOTAM advisor too.

Video: Dual XC from KJWN - > KTHA 11/22/2014

 With the holiday and potentially funky hours, I suggest calling to make sure the museum is open. I've only been once and there were about 3 people in the whole facility that day the other 2 were staff. Nice to not fight the crowds, but that doesn't bode well for keeping the doors...

    100 Hours and Still Nervous

Nerves are a good thing. Passengers are a distraction. Go get some good solo time. Start small and work your way out. Build confidence in your abilities and expand your personal envelope without that distraction. Fly frequently. You want to get where you instinctually do things; where you are...

Video: Dual XC from KJWN - > KTHA 11/22/2014

Stop in at the Beechcraft museum sometime. Neat place. Nice video. What was your camera setup?

    Visual Basic

A not-so-oddball solution we do a lot with old stuff, clone your old machine into a virtual machine on your new machine. Then you can keep using your old VB. But honestly, that's just a stopgap and this is the perfect time to move to VB.NET or some other language. If you want an interesting...

AeroWeather (iOS) now has Widget View

Thank you. I love AeroWeather, but had no idea about this wonderful new feature. Just enabled it.

What did you do after achieving PPL?

I took a couple friends up and then stopped flying. Picked it back up again 10 years later and fly as much as (or maybe slightly more than) I can afford.

    Aviation family?

My dad was a pilot and owned a Cherokee 140, but stopped flying about the time I was born. Later we built/flew R/C planes. Lots of fun. I got my PPL in college, but dad had already passed. My sister just got her PPL this year too. I've got a great uncle on my Mom's side that used to fly...

    Foreflight and ADSB speculation...

That's exactly what I think. For the vast majority of aircraft I could afford to own this is what I'd do.

Do you like the bigger or mini ipads better?

It really depends on what you fly. I've been flying with the full size and a leg strap or leg strap+case for 3 years now. I'm mostly in Cessnas (162, 172, and very occassionally a 182) and it doesn't get in the way. I've started flying a DA40 and it's not quite a good fit there. If that DA40...

The best tailwind you've ever had on a flight?

About 46 knots. I was going 148 KGS in a Cessna 162 flying back to Memphis from the TN-KY border. KTAS was *maybe* 102 at the time. I couldn't believe that I was going that fast in a SkyCatcher period and this was without wheel pants.

ForeFlight - North up or Track up

North up. Same with my car GPS. Seems to drive everyone batty, but I've been doing it long enough I get confused with track up.

    Orange beach AL trip?

I really like the Hilton Garden Inn there. Friends recommended it and since I've met several people that always stay there for annual family vacation. It isn't a new property, but the facilities are good and it's right on the beach.

    Do you get some trim?

My primary instructors (in a 152) taught trim as a way to relieve yoke pressure. I was amazed when I figured out trimming for speed.
