Plane down in Western Washington

“...Of the pilots that undertook the flight, and there-by undertaking a higher level of risk, it appears that older pilots are more willing to engage in risky behaviours, and those with higher levels of self-confidence more likely to attempt to minimise the risk/s in a hazardous situation.”
Old, bold pilots? Thought there wasn't such a thing.

First of all, nice Chief photo! But while the majority get old by not being bold, there is also alongside that. . . "familiarity breeds contempt".

This fellow was a felon and had a lengthy criminal history.. so Covid or no he was not going to be allowed into Canada.

I don't think it matters if you declare an in flight emergency
No it wouldn't, but it is why he was trying to go straight through in a airplane that didn't have the legs for it, which would have to be explained.

Actually I think those are starting to become a little more uncommon. Problem with IMC is it creeps up on you. But with the penetration of real time weather in cockpits you can see what's ahead of you and think strategically.

Glass or partial glass cockpits, more widespread installation of reliable autopilots and GPS have all aided in this as well.

The really nice thing is with an inexpensive ADSB receiver and a tablet you can have near real time weather and keep yourself out of the soup and the scary stuff.
