how can a pilot under basic med return to flight status without having a medical exam after2006? I quit flying after 9/11/2001

Quit flying because 9/11? BasicMed might be the least of your worries then. You know single engine airplanes are dangerous right? :stirpot::D

BTW, Welcome to POA!

You can't do basic med, you'll have to get a 3rd class

Basic Med is only an option if you had a current Medical of any class in late July 2016. If yours expired before then, you will need a new one and convert to Basic Med when it expires instead of renewing it.

Right. Shouldn't be a problem getting back in the saddle if he quit because 9/11 potato, and not a medical SI type boondoggle.

You’ll need one more 3rd class, then never again.

If you exercise sport pilot privileges only, and if your last application for a medical certificate was successful, then you don't even need BasicMed, only a valid driver's license.

It all depends on what you want to fly and what your health status is. No one here can adequately answer your question without that knowledge.

To exercise flight privileges under basic med in your situation you will have to first qualify for at least a 3rd class medical. If desired, you can let that medical expire in 2 years and continue to remain qualified to fly by meeting the basic med requirements.
