Hello all,

I am hoping you guys can suggest some destinations for my wife and I on for our 15 year Anniversary. (late October)

I would like it to be within 250-300 miles of Indianapolis.

We are kinda wanting an easy airport to fly into and stay a night or two.

Any suggestions ? This will be the first Anniversary that I get to fly us somewhere !

Thanks!

If you want to pamper her (and yourself) try Kohler WI, American Club and Spa.
265nm.
Land at sheboygan, $12 cab to resort.

Mackinac island. (KMCD) A little chilly late October but fun. Great airport and a horse and buggy ride into town (no motor vehicles allowed). Can be romantic if you wish and the island has a lot of history with the Fort that's there to tour.

Go a little further, go to Manhattan, fly into Republic and catch a bus/train to the city, it's easy. Shop at Bergdorf Goodman's, don't buy lol, just shop. They had a shirt I so wanted, work of textile art it was, $1100!:hairraise: Go to the park, take a carriage ride, walk Hells Kitchen during lunch and stop where your nose leads you. Catch a show... Manhattan is an easy weekend trip from Indy and makes for a great wow on many levels including a lot of really neat architecture. For as bad of a reputation as New Yorkers have, I've never had a problem there and found people friendly and helpful.:dunno:

Had to laugh at the details of that: (One VERY DISCREET PILOT ! ) LOL:rofl:

Package Includes:
1 Hour Flight
Private Curtained Aircraft
Champagne
Chocolates
One (1) VERY DISCREET PILOT

I guess I could always install a curtain in the Cherokee ?? lol

Cherokee Six most definitely, and get yourself (assuming CPL) on an MRO supervised drug screen program along with insurance that allows commercial operations and you signed off by the FSDO to haul rides under 119 within 25SM of the airport without getting a 135 cert. You want one with the club seating and remove the back seats and tossing in a piece of plywood and a mattress or make a foam pit. They belt in facing aft for T/O and Landing and are free to enjoy themselves in cruise. There is champaign, cheese and fruit for the climb and after snacking.

An option a lot closer to home, Madison IN. A wonderful little historic town (dozens of entire blocks on the national historic register), on the Ohio River, full of B&Bs, quaint shops, wineries, etc. Nice airport about 5 miles out of town

It's a great little getaway town http://www.visitmadison.org

I was going to suggest Traverse City but it will be a little chilly by late October. Memphis is always fun, and a little warmer.
Asheville NC is a cool town, and 313nm
Cleveland is a suprisingly fun town, particularly if there's a home game in town

I have been here - and arriving by air is a unique experience since you land right at the resort -there are no instrument approaches here and it is Pennsylvania so cloud cover is almost guaranteed! That said it is the clearest time of year in the northeast . . .

http://www.airnav.com/airport/PA88

It is 311nm east of you . . . so right at the outer edge. . . .

These types of places are very unique - there are couple in NY State that are $1000 a night for the cheapest room - all inclusive gourmet meals - really high end. For a 2 night deal it will work ok - plus you have airports with instrument approaches within 10-20 miles and can scud run over to the airfield of ceilings are 2000 OVC -

Nashville has a great music scene, well worth a visit even if your aren't country music fans.

Pigeon Forge airport treated us nice when we here there a few years ago, rental cars available. Lots of things to see and do in the are.

I like Nashville as well, but I usually go into Lebanon as I have friends in Mt. Juilet.

We love Gatlinburg but honestly I have not flown that far south near the Mountains before..
260 some nm's KIND to KGKT. KGKT is a nice airport, easy to get into and out of (5500 foot runway untowered), not too busy, and not too close to the mountains either - take a look at the sectional.

I considered suggesting this also. We love going there. I will be there next weekend to take in a little music.

Ouch! I will start checking out TN.. That sounds awesome and not to bad.. I will look at the sectional

I thought the same, and took FlylikeaGirl there for our anniversary in June. We didn't really enjoy it. Could be that we stayed in hotel in town. Perhaps a rental home/cabin away from town would have helped?

The smell of horse doodie is everywhere on the island, and there are more fudge shops on the main strip in town than Starbucks in Manhattan.

Ok, there is a "slight" odor of horse in the air, but, my wife and I had a good weekend there. We stayed at the Island House. It's very old with a lot of history.

And, who doesn't like fudge for crying out loud. Heck we hit both the Starbucks and the fudge shop(s) at the same time. The two combined gave us enough go-go juice to walk all over the island.

Hahahahaha! I was just talking about this post this weekend. We were in Oklahoma, and a place was selling a giant metal chicken. I felt like I was finally meeting Beyonce!

My daughter (whose husband also made a similar towel edict which made the Beyonce thing all the more funny for us) has a small metal chicken in her garden (they've only been married five years or so). Since it's smaller they call it "Blue Ivy."

A close option is to fly to French Lick (KFRH) and stay at the West Baden Springs resort. It's an easy flight from Indy, and the hotel runs a shuttle out to the municipal airport. I went down there for a weekend for business, and it was a really easy flight, and ground transportation was really easy and cheap (as in FREE!). They have golf, a spa, and other typical resort things, plus a fairly mediocre casino. (Although I did win over $800 when two goofball locals called my all in bet on the flop with top set, and both were on the same flush draw, and they weren't getting the odds to call, and the flush did not come home .) Overall, French Lick/West Baden is not a bad option.

A longer trip (300nm from EYE), fly to Lewisburg, WV airport (KWLB ), and take a cab to the Greenbrier resort. (About 15 minutes away by car). The resort is phenomenal. West Baden Springs is similar, but not up to the standard of the Greenbrier. Rent one of their cottages on the grounds if you want a special treat. That time of year, it should be gorgeous. The airport has a massive runway because the Greenbrier has a bunker (which you can now tour) that was the secret hide-away for congress (ALL of it, both houses) in case of nuclear attack, so its got a massive runway to accommodate massive airplanes, although the airport is a podunc little airport barely worthy of a class D airspace. More money, but definitely worth it. They have lots of activities, such as golf, horse back riding, tennis, shooting, and the most awesome (and I am not kidding, it was awesome) croquet lawn. I mean that thing was like a billiard table crossed with the best golf green you ever saw. We had a ton of fun drinking and playing with some friends with their awesome croquette set and manicured lawn. They also have a small (tiny, really) casino that is cool to see because of the decor. Its based on the Dorthy Draper décor of the rest of the hotel. (My wife is a big fan of her décor, which is the only reason I had ever heard the name.) But you don't go there for the casino. That is really an afterthought. Overall, this resort is tres cool!

If it were summer time, I would suggest going up to Put in Bay Island (3W2) off the north shore of Ohio up near Sandusky. Not too far at all. (192 nm from EYE) But that is a little late in the year for that trip. I have never been there. This may be a good trip for people that like to drink alcohol, as I am not sure what there is to do there other than bar hop. Maybe others can chime in.

I can second the Greenbrier. They have various special weekend "deals" that are a lot of fun. The bride and I went for a ballroom dancing weekend for our tenth. Sounds corny, but was a blast. We got one of the little cottages by asking for an upgrade when we got there. Nice.
Little sitting room with fireplace which they light for you when they turn down the bed while you're at dinner. A limo is at your service to shuttle you back and forth to the main hotel. The food, well, magnificent hardly describes it.

Highly recommend.

It's further than you asked, but Fantasy Fest in Key West is in October

Oprayland Hotel Nashville, TN
Mackinac Island is nearly an annual weekend or day trip for us
Niagara Falls might be doable, but chilly
