Was it a cross-country? Instructor said no.

Hello, I know this has been discussed ad-nauseum, that a cross-country flight is any flight in which the pilot navigates from one airport to another, and lands at the other airport, regardless of distance. Also, certain certificates require a certain number of hours of CC flights of a certain...

My "New and Improved" Landings, Right on the 1000-Foot Bars

Thanks for all the replies, guys. I helps put in perspective what this thing is, this thing about aiming for the bars. -Scott V.

My "New and Improved" Landings, Right on the 1000-Foot Bars

Thanks for all the replies. I didn't mean to imply that I was not tested for short field landings on my checkride, because I was, or that I don't know how to land on short fields, because I do, or that I don't know how to fly at all, because I do. I mentioned in the OP that I was talking...

My "New and Improved" Landings, Right on the 1000-Foot Bars

Hello- I've been flying off and on since 1987, and I have about 300 hours. Lately I've been working on getting instrument-rated. I realize that discussions on this forum cannot be a substitute for actual training with my CFII, for whom I have the utmost respect. When I was in primary PP...

    Need PPL Finish-Up (North Texas)

In some cities in the U.S., instructors don't have enough students, and the planes spend a lot of time just sitting on the tarmac. You might want to try one of those cities, and hammer out your remaining time there. For example, Kansas City.

Is "Number 1 for landing" the same as "cleared to land"?

I think a certain amount of "reasonableness" is implied, i.e., if you don't get clearance to land, you do a go around. A normal go around.

Is "Number 1 for landing" the same as "cleared to land"?

Today I was approaching a controlled airport, and several miles out, was told "number 1 for landing." I was on short final and hadn't yet heard the magic words "cleared to land," so I asked if I was cleared to land. The controller politely said yes. But I couldn't help wondering whether...

    Need PPL Finish-Up (North Texas)

I would suggest using this time to finish studying for the written and taking it. Sorry, I'm not a CFI. I feel your pain; I've had my share of issues with CFIs. Also, you might want to consider taking a couple weeks off from work and going to a different city to complete your training.

Do you fly DPs and STARs?

Thanks, guys for all the great replies. I personally enjoy using flight simulators when I'm not actually flying, and I can practice using DPs and STARs in flight simulators. Then I was wondering how often I could expect to see them in real life... -Scott

Do you fly DPs and STARs?

Hello, I'm working on my IFR rating, and I was wondering whether you actually fly DPs and STARs. I live in the Midwest, where air traffic is not too congested, and I've never been assigned a DP or STAR, nor do I know anyone who has. I'm under the impression that DPs and STARs are mainly for use...

CFII badgering me about radio communication, reading back too much

Hate to resurrect an old thread, but I want to say I appreciated all this feedback, and I did end up switching to a different CFII.

CFII badgering me about radio communication, reading back too much

Hello- I've been working on my IR, and have about 15 hours of hood time so far. In my last lesson my CFII suddenly started badgering me about repeating too much stuff to ATC. He refused to be specific about what he was talking about, and simply said I should refer to the AIM. I looked at the AIM...

    High-altitude take off

Thanks, guys; I think the point here is to: 1. Taxi into position and add FT with brakes on, and fine tune the mixture. 2. Don't be in a hurry to rotate, and when I do, lower the nose and stay in ground effect until I reach Vx, and then start climbing and gradually accelerating to Vy. But...

    High-altitude take off

I did my second high altitude takeoff yesterday. Airport elevation 6300 feet. I took off from the same airport last October, and everything was fine. Yesterday's takeoff was a little squirrely. After rotating, the aircraft came down and bounced on the runway. When we started climbing again, our...

    Just beat the cold front

Flew a long cross-country yesterday, 570 nm. There was a cold front moving into my destination Airport. When I landed the winds were around 7 knots, but within an hour winds were 30 gusting to 40. So I feel that I cut that one close. Lesson learned: take a look at the surface prognostic charts...
