What to see in Austin and Houston?

Austin... Eat at Hudson's on the Bend near Bee Cave, the hill country of Austin. One of my favorites - Lance Armstrong eats there sometimes when he's in town. For good cheap Texican food, I like Maudes (71 & Bee Cave - across from Hill Country Galleria). For night life, just park at 6th...

What to invest in over the next 30 years?

Invest in things that everyone will obviously need someday. HEALTH CARE. And with the world population booming, there will always be a need for it. Lot's of good funds from Vanguard (VGHCX) , and they make it SUPER easy to invest.

    PC-12 midair breakup?

I noticed there are no Live ATC recordings posted from their flight, so no details leading up to the accident like a warning of active sigmet, pilot reports, etc. There were reports of a "may day" call from the pilot ( by another pilot nearby), and he likely would have been on a recorded...

Proper piston single (non-turbo) decent techniques

I don't fly a turbo-charged airplane, but I believe you need to maintain a relatively slow decent with power so that the engine doesn't cool too fast and possibly crack the turbo unit. That got me thinking - is there a "right" way to descend a non-turbo'd engine so that you don't harm it as...

    These crashes are getting scary

I thought the overall "crash per flight hour" was slowly declining? My instructor taught me 20 years ago that most crashes were weather related. I tell my friends that flying has never been safer because of Garmin. I have a "cheap" moving map in my plane which has satellite weather, so I...

Gear goes down half way... then stops

For anyone who is familiar with the piper arrow... I'm flying my 1968 arrow yesterday solo, breaking in my rebuilt engine. After a 2 hour flight, I return to my airport and hit the gear down switch. I can hear the gear start to drop... then stop and no green lights. No light on the "gear in...

Woman's SECOND Chance To Go To Outer Space

A female blond, a redhead, and brunette astronauts were all 3 sitting at a bar one night. The brunette said, "the brunettes were the first girls to fly in space." And the redhead said, "oh yeah.. well the red heads are going to be the first girls to land on the moon." And the blond said...

Typical areas for an oil leak?

It's the Lyc B1E 180 horse. I don't think it's an engine gasket based on the volume of oil splattered over everything in just 45 minutes. It's not from the valve covers because those were easy to check. I'm just praying it's a "quick fix". I'll update this post after we find it, which...

Typical areas for an oil leak?

My Arrow was recently "re-born" after my nose gear collapse. The engine was torn apart, each piece inspected, and re-built up in Poplar Grove. Not a complete overhaul, but close. My local mechanic in MO re-installed the engine and put everything back together. He flew it 2 hours, and then...

    First real emergency

Great job dude! This brings up a question for the group. I have small "erosol" fire extinguisher in the passenger front pocket of my plane. The kind that looks like a can of spray paint. I have no idea what legal fire extinguishers are approved for airplanes. I never fly over 9K feet, so i...

What do you do for a living?

Sales guy for a medical software company. Best job ever. Slowly working towards a CFI rating so I can teach people to fly... but not until my kids are grown and out of the house.

    The Adventure Begins

Been there five times and loved it each time. Was just there in August. Have never flown myself, but plan to in the next couple years. Lots of GA planes at MHH. By far the best way to enjoy that area is to rent a boat and go island hopping. It's very easy. Buy the "Cruising guide to Abaco" from...

Four Out Of Four Out Of Towners Scrapped Flights

It's been VFR in Kansas for like the last 200 days! Of course, there isn't much "site seeing" to be done here.

    Favorite On-Field Restaurant?

If you're ever in Kansas City, you need to stop by Miami County airport (south of the city) K81 and get BarBQue. Very popular destination - always a lot of nice home-builts. And the self serve gas is cheap. Two weeks ago, it was $4.63 a gallon. The smoked brisket is killer!

Electronics Emergency - Turn off Master?

I would think my first instinct would be to grab the wheel and try to overpower the servo too, but in the mooney's case, the pilot was very low to the ground and had to make a decision extremely quickly. Conditions (like flying in IMC, ILS approach, etc) would factor into the decision too...
