    Lots of static; sometimes.

I recently took a long cross country and noticed I was getting a lot of intermittent static on my Garmin 530w. It seems to get a lot worse when I am close to large airports. When it occurs, the static is constant and horrible. But hen Approach calls me, the static subsides a little bit so I...

No longer need to log GPS updates?

Does this apply to VFR pilots too? I have a Garmin 496 and a Garmin 530w. Neither one has been updated in about a year, and I don't have logs for either of them. And my (VFR) flight review is coming up. Do I need to update my GPS databases? It sounds like I won't have to log it at any rate. J

    Engine leaning

The boot wasn't his idea. It was my boot but I didn't have the time or the desire to remove it after I placed it. Eventually; somewhere around post #8. And I got some really good answers too. By the way, I paid for the plane and almost everything else too. He was lucky he didn't get the other...

    Engine leaning

Why the attitude? Most of the people did a good job of answering the questions I wanted answered. In the past, all I would get when I asked was stupid answers like this one: What the heck is a 4/8 probe? What did I say that indicated I didn't want an engine monitor? In fact, I called my...

    Engine leaning

Thank you so much. It is all making sense now. After reading everyone else's comments, your post really summed it up well. And it helped that you explained why it is probably taught the way it is. I always felt that when I asked my CFI these questions that he either didn't know or didn't...

    Engine leaning

Ok, I have read over this thread a couple of times. I cut and pasted most of the comments into a word document. I am beginning to understand it but I am going to read over it a few times before I go up again and then practice leaning until it quits. (If I die, I'm coming after you Bob...

    Engine leaning

Hey thanks for all the replies. Sorry I forgot to say what type of plane I fly. It is a 1978 Cessna 172 with a 180hp engine. I have a fuel flow gauge and an EGT gauge and of course a tach. One thing that confuses me is that they all vary so much it is hard to tell how much is due to leaning...

    Engine leaning

Hi. I just discovered this board and it looks like a good place to ask my stupid questions. I say they are stupid because everyone tells me how easy it is, but it never seems easy to me. For example: ROP (Rich of Peak). Peak What? Do I lean to peak RPM or peak EGT? I was told to lean...
