Portable Flight Simulator - Take Home Version

I'd agree with this. I do enjoy, occasionally, a simulated flight at home, but it's just not the same. The biggest thing missing from home simulation (when I do it anyway) is random events. The things we need to practice for IFR aren't takeoffs and coupled-approaches, but things like cockpit...

Best Desktop or Laptop Flight Sim?

It's pretty reasonable for what you're getting. If nothing else you can generally be pretty sure that a Costco price isn't a ripoff. If you have heavy video/photo uses for that machine other than X-Plane then it may be what you need. Or maybe you just want it to be very "future-proof." But...

Best Desktop or Laptop Flight Sim?

Yes, it's way more powerful than you need actually. That's a very high-end PC with a moderately high-end graphics card. It'll play something like X-Plane 10 with virtually everything maxed out I suspect.

    Wireless Router with USB In?

I don't have Verizon any more, but when I was under the impression that they were required to allow third-party tethering software as part of their settlement with the FCC from 2012.

    2008 Remos for sale

I'm wondering if some posts got deleted for violating the "classified section" rules. Nothing that remains seems remotely hateful. I wish there was a little note left in those cases to provide context and prevent posts like this one. Back on topic... I have always thought a Remos or CTLS...

    Mode C question

Can you reference that? I don't recall it from my SFRA course nor could I find anything online. Obviously you keep the discrete code until shut down and never use 1200, but I'm 95% sure our GTX-330 goes to "ground" automatically on landing. Ground is different than standby in that it still...

    Bank 'Fraud Detection' and Flying

Hmm, I don't think it's quite so simple. When I travel for work the airfare, hotel, and car all go on the corporate travel card, which is a MasterCard issued by Bank "A." I then start buying things in a new city using my personal Visa, issued by Bank "B" and it's never an issue. Bank "B" would...

    Forelight For iPad and Navigation

Yes. That said, the reason many of us are wary is that it sounds like you're jumping into the deep end a little early. You're not doing anything Earth-shatteringly stupid, or anything that hasn't been done before, but it'd be best to take a CFI along as backup. There's substantial risk here...

    Forelight For iPad and Navigation

What kind of plane? I've never had an issue getting GPS reception on my iPad, even when it's sitting on my lap. (aside from whether or not you'd rely on it under these circumstances)

How familiar are you with Foreflight? What about night flying in general?

    Avionics - Sales Tax??

Is there a chance that your state will come after you for the use tax that you owe for getting the work done out of state? I know this has been an issue with the outright purchase of aircraft.

    Auto Descend

It is now, but wasn't until a few years back. Most of us did not have to do it on the ride, and I'm sure I wasn't the only one who was never taught such a maneuver before getting the certificate. I've seen it covered since, of course.

    TAF versus MOS?

5 statute miles from the center of the airport. They're basically point forecasts, especially if the terrain is not uniform in the area. Personally I like tools like MOS for longer lead times more than as a substitute in between TAFs. I wouldn't base a flight to minimums on it, but then...

    Cessna 172 insurance $3,000 a month????

It can't be per month. What does a very active rental fly, maybe 60 hours a month? The insurance alone would be $50/hour.

    Thinking about an ipad....

Get the T-Mobile version. They're all unlocked and you can use them on any carrier you choose, but you might as well start with a T-Mobile SIM card. You just need to activate it (no contract, no payment, no fuss) and you'll get 200MB/month LTE data for life. It's real convenient for filing...
