I just did a top on my TSIO-520 D. Exchanged 3 cylinders with Gibson for Nikasil cylinders and am very happy....I should have done all six....

ok...the nuts are visible from the outside....the spar is visible from the inside.
remove the covers on the belly.....and the nuts and lower spar is visible for inspection.
think.....smoking rivets. movement between the two surfaces causes it.
my head is always clean.....cause or no cause. Hair just doesn't grow there anymo.o_O
the damage was there for a while....and shoulda been seen during the last inspection. IMHO. ;)

yup....shiny is new damage....black (fretting) and dull is old damage.
yup....a PA-28 Cherokee.
What is not known.....did the blade fail first or was it a secondary or tertiary failure.....but, it's early yet.
