The otter had no transponder, just the GSL 71 UAT control head and ADS-B in and out. The GDL 90's were replaced by a FreeFlight ranger system that was gettto engineered to fit into the tray the GDL 90 used. With the GDL 90 the Chelton in the otter would have given an aural and visual alert...
GPS can not be used for lateral guidance inside the FAF for an ground based approach unless labled or GPS.
There are provisions in Part 135/121 to allow GPS as sole source for NDB & VOR approaches.. but it takes some worm to get approved.

Done SDL-KTN a bunch.. it is pretty much empty country from the Phoenix metro area all the way to Seattle. The Victoria/Vancouver area either went IFR through or low on floats over the water.

Always lots of black bears there on a warm evening. I have gone around in Hoonah for brownies crossing the runway to go fishing before.
Last go around was for a humpback whale surfacing in front of me while landing at a fishing lodge.
