Flying into MDW to pick up passengers

JP, can you post a PIREP about how your pickup went, including any fees and security hassles? Making a pickup at MDW has come to my mind a few times, but I've always been too intimidated to try it. --Brent

    Throw away your paper charts...

I bought a ChartBook from Flightprep last week. I concur that a backup is needed. It was a little over $2000 for the entire setup. This includes a convertible laptop running Windows XP, power adapter for 12 and 24 volt systems, a bluetooth receiver for the laptop, a bluetooth GPS receiver, a...

    Digital AFD Download Script

Ha! Nope, I sure have not seen that before. All the googling I did failed to turn that up.

    Digital AFD Download Script

No, I don't have anything like that. The resulting PDF will have all the pages in the printed AFD (less a few miscellaneous pages that don't seem to be online, does anyone know why?), though, so you could just open the file in acrobat (or whatever PDF reader) and use the search function to find...

    Digital AFD Download Script

I have written a script that will download all the individual pages of a given AFD, and then combine them all into a single PDF file. It wil work for any of the AFD volumes, or even compile all of the volumes with a single command. The script is written for bash, and works under linux. It...

Gotcha, thanks for the info. --Brent

Chicago area TFR's or Prohibited area if Obama is elected?

The NOTAM says that you must squawk from takeoff - so filing VFR gets you a code at what point? At the time you file? Does flight service assign you a code over the phone when you file? I'd love to get the skinny on how to depart from the outer ring, as I'm out of 05C... --Brent

    Chicago Lakefront VFR

Well, we didn't go today. I called the flight while I was doing pattern work at Griffith before my friend showed up for us to go to Porter County to pick up his wife. While turning downwind runway 26, I noticed that the sun had disappeared behind what seemed a towering front. I noticed the...

    David Clark X11 headset

If it is a military set, then there should only be one plug, like a helo set, right? I admit I could be completely wrong...

    Chicago Lakefront VFR

Awesome - I'll give MDW a call up once we're out of Gary's airspace. Gonna try to go tomorrow - I'll let you know how it went. Its been so long since I've done this flight, I'm really looking forward to it. Thanks to all for the tips!

    Chicago Lakefront VFR

Mike, Good call. Does LockMart know all the schedules? I thought I remember hearing some years ago, when all the stadium TFRs came about, that flight service had no info about those types of TFRs. Has that changed, do they now provide that info?

    Chicago Lakefront VFR

Jason, Thanks for the tips - I'll let GYY tower help as much as they can. Small world, too, since I'm picking my passengers up at VPZ! Thanks also for the heads-up about the stadiums. Since I posted earlier today, I have downloaded Golden Eagle Flightprep, as well as AOPA's real-time flight...

    Chicago Lakefront VFR

I wonder if anyone can pass on any tips for doing a VFR sightseeing flight up the Chicago lakefront, staying below the class B at say 2500', coming from the south and then doing a 180 at some point up north of the city? I have flown it many times in the past, but that was pre 9/11, before...
