Flying Wild Alaska

When Jim was flying the climbers in, I noticed they blurred out the wing mounted camera. Wonder why?

Probably hiding either the "secret" camera technology in use, or hiding the mount made out of gaffer's tape from being seen by the FAA. :)

What I'd like to know is where the camera man who shot the two little indian girls in the cabin, slept that night? there were only 2 bunks.

You dirty ol'....

THAT is a good question! There are probably at least a crew of two with a video and sound man, plus a producer, unless Ariel serves there. Why, maybe we'd think that the whole thing from "Goodnight" to "Good Morning" was staged and shot in an hour?

I don't remember if they had any long in motion shots, but if so they had to be shooting the girls on the "snow machine" from another one ahead of it.

That would be a shi- bomb, for those who are not nautical types that is when you are stupid enough to flush when the snips are blowing tanks.

the non nautical types aren't going to know what snipes are either, or what a head valve is.

Is it just me but that main guy in the 180 takes some stupid and dangerious risks all for a few dollars

First ep I saw he mentioned that he needed X amount of feet but didn't have it but proceeded anyway.... clear case of poor decision making and is a bad example to set on a show watched by newbie pilots

<sarcasm> Which is why we now have a consummate seasoned pilot (Ariel) warning us not to try this at home as the lead-in, a la Mythbusters. We wouldn't want another pilot having "engine problems" needing to put down on a beach on the East Coast again.</sarcasm>

The Ohio guys are fun to watch... And they handle the planes well...
Let me point out that they are landing on manicured pastures and strips... No stumps, no boulders, and no weeds up to the doors that could be hiding a hole that will rip off a wheel... And no 300 mile walk back to the nearest village...
But, looks like fun... Makes me want to track down my old T-Craft and buy it back...

denny-o

I don't understand why everyone is picking the show apart for every little detail. It's reality TV , not a National Geographic documentary. Take it for its face value of entertainment.

If I sat there during every gun fight scene in a movie and picked apart how many rounds they fired without reloading, or every military flick and picked apart improper uniforms , rank placement and everything that was not within reg , I sure wouldn't enjoy too much of it.

Those movies are not reality shows. And if they went to an informational graphic as the narrator said the clip held 6 bullets as the guy unloaded 14, anybody would have a complaint.

I just can't see getting bent over a television show. It's entertainment.

You must be relatively new around here... people here don't need 'reasons' to get bent - we just need a topic. ;)

I loath whenever I see someone point a gun in a movie or on a TV show, it makes a slide-racking sound, even though no slide was pulled. It's as if pointing a gun created a sound like a bag of metal parts being banged around.

LOL... I do that. And I enjoy it immensely. :)

At least they haven't had an airplane go out of control when the engine quits - only to be saved at the last instant by the pilot putting their forearms behind the yoke and pulling with all their strength.

Yet.

Yeah - and you have to make sure to have the sound effects of an engine racing out of control, even though it was the engine failure that caused the screaming dive in the first place. Oh, and make sure to include somebody being sucked out the window, too.

Well if your name is Crow T. Robot or Tom Servo I bet you'd be picking apart those films, and have a great time doing it, to!

it's 'magazine', not 'clip'. if we're being nitpicky. ha

They're on Netflix. I got sucked into finding out about that about six months ago late one night when I couldn't sleep... Heh heh.

They didn't do too many aviation movies; here's one compilation of MST3K "favorite moments" from their viewing of "The Starfighters":

Being a TV show, they need drama. Being that their flying is going on national TV, they know the FAA is watching. Funny how when they are flying, weather is never below minimums.... They are sure to walk a straight line with all the scrutiny.

There are plenty of people up here that do stupid stuff, but ERA under that scrutiny won't be. There's no lack of stupid people anywhere, and sometimes some pretty bright people do stupid stuff on occasion anyway.

OMG that was funny. Thank you for that. Especially the "watch out for that leading edge it is sharp" part. Ha.

This show is pretty silly. Sure, it gets windy out west sometimes but, I thought flying in the winds in Oklahoma was a lot worse than it is up here. This is a lot more remote though. Most of the guys I know that fly up here, have not so nice things to say about that show. They're right. It's pretty stupid. A lot of it is manufactured. I was watching one episode where some dude was taking off in a 206 in a "extreme" crosswind. He takes off and the plane immediately starts crabbing into the wind and a good angle. My wife was like, "Oh my gosh!". However, I noticed that he was stepping on the rudder as hard as he could in that direction. Pretty dumb.

Heh heh... just another day in Wyoming...

A friend had his IR check ride scheduled for today -- he wisely cancelled. :)

Aw come on.... That's just a 'light' breeze here... The hardest part is determining if one should use flaps or not during the landing .;);):D

Ben.

Okay... This "Flying Wild Alaska" is getting a little too much for me. I now know that all the W&B calculations I've been doing over the years is a waste of time. All I have to do is load the airplane until the tail drops to the ground. Then Take stuff off unil the nose wheel touches again. Did anybody else see this, I think it was the Friday before last episode.

I'm guessing he wasn't going far, as a lot of fuel burn could have made life 'interesting' for him.

I have seen the same method applied to Bonanzas and a Cherokee Six.

I saw that. Who knew the CG was directly over the main wheels? :dunno:

The best way to burn in the new engine and see what effect the extra weight on the nose causes is to make a charter flight at gross with passengers and lotsa gear.

HA HA HA! That donkey looks like it totally hates its life.

People overload their planes all the time up here. During the summer of 2010, there was a guy who loaded his Cessna 206 up with a bunch of building materials to fly out to his cabin somewhere. He then loaded up his family as well. They left Merrill field which is the busiest GA airport in the country from what I understand and is right in downtown Anchorage. It's not uncommon to see planes flying around here with lumber and ladders and stuff like that strapped to the outside. Anyways, they crashed shortly after takeoff. The couple's 4 year old sun burned to death inside the plane. Bystanders got the rest of them out but not without severe burns to the whole family. The accident report said that the plane was almost 700 pounds over it's max allowable takeoff weight and the CG was 3 to 8 inches aft of the aft limit. It's amazing, some of the bad decisions people make.
