So I need to return to JFK on Monday at around1330 to pick up my wife from her two week excursion. I had an interesting trip when I dropped her off. Now the weather is forecast to be good, I've got another trip under the belt for practice with New York ATC, and what happens? President "I can't stay in Washington" has to close the airspace around JFK. I can't be guaranteed to have her plane be on time, clear customs, get back to the GAT, and get out of JFK before 1630.

Are there any airports nearby that are easily accessible by train from JFK? As long as I am outside of the inner rings of JFK and LGA, I should be ok.

President normally blocks 30nm ring to the ground, not just the inner surface ring.
You should be able to get in and out on IFR clearance.

POTUS is all about "Jobs", but thinks nothing of shutting down airport businesses, flight schools and fuel sales where ever he goes.

I can't get in and out within the inner ring around JFK. That means I must travel outside that 7 or 8 mile ring to be able to get in and out IFR. I am looking at FRG. Would one of the FBO's drop me off at the train station and then pick me up later?

Correct me if I'm wrong......but is he the 1st president to "shut down airports, businesses, flight schools etc.. where ever he goes? :nono:

looks like he loves flying :) after all, why stay home when you have access to a modified 747...lol

I don't care who the president is, it annoys me when he goes someplace and it screws up my travel. If I go someplace, it doesn't screw up his travel, and he works for me.

understood but when it comes to the security of the commander-in-chief, i don't think the secret service gives a rats ass about how inconvenient we are as pilots/travelers! so that statement about him not caring about jobs was utter nonsense IN MY OPINION.

Show me where a TFR has done anything to keep him safe? Unless you are reffering to the old lady in her wicker airplane that got intercepted a few months ago preparing to give her life for Allah.

hey, i think a 30nm TFR is kind of big also, but obviously the feds don't. why do we have a 30nm mode-c veil from the surface up to 10k? why not a 15 mile veil?

Not at all. He just seems to do it more frequently.:dunno:

I'll say add it up. Odds are he's probably no worst than the last.

I think the whole TFR business (not just VIP, but sports, et al.) is horse-puckey myself.

It was chicken-sh&t when it was done for President Bush, it's still chicken-sh%t for President Spendy-Pass-This-Bill.

30 mile mode c veil............

where? This needs some context.

my point is... there's a whole lot of sht the gov't does that doesn't make much sense or goes to the extreme, but if you want to attack the president, do so on his policies not the crap that he has no control over like TFRs when he travel! that's why i asked the question "is he the 1st to do this".

I know what a mode C veil is. I was asking where you were complaining about it being so big? I guess it's kinda silly under the outer shelf of the airspace, but It starts where class B does. That DOES make sense.

Whereas el presidente projects a large TFR 30 miles off wherever he is going.

back in the 60's some people probably thought it was silly overkill to have the president in a bullet proof tank/car rather than a convertible like the one that JFK(RIP) was riding in!!! I wonder what those folks would think in today's world!

This whole thing of presidential TFR's is so incredibly stupid. In years past, nobody really knew exactly where the president was flying in the first place so it never mattered. Now, everyone does and a well placed dirty bomb is assured to take him out. And many others.

...but they damn sure knew where he was driving!!! RIP President JFK. If only we thought of the silly things back then, you'd probably still be alive

Actually he was told to use the bulletproof car and refused. He took his chances and lost.

Maybe our current POTUS could refuse his TFR? ;)

I've heard this reference in other forums, as well as this one, and I just don't buy it. If the president -- our highest elected leader -- has "no control over his TFRs when he travels" -- who does?

If a president put his foot down, manned up, and ordered them gone -- the TFRs would be gone.

Not at all, before 9/11, I remember Pres Clinton closed LAX while he sat in AF1 getting a hair cut. Back then the airports were only closed while the Pres was on the airport.

Since 9/11, everything is tied down for 30nm. And yes, Pres Bush did it too.

Another pre-9/11 example, part of KBED was shut down when the Secret Service support stuff was here because of First Lady Hillary Clinton. (yep, not the President, not the VP, but just Hillary).

I understand the desire to shut down the airport when the Pres is arriving or departing, but why a 3 day inner ring TFR around both LGA and JFK?

And why are scheduled airliners still allowed to enter and leave as normal, but not the rest of us? As I recall, it was not a Twin Comanche that slammed into the World Trade Centers.

Just my own personal rant, I really do understand the desire to at least appear to have heightened security.

The plan is this: Arrive FRG and have Sheltair or Atlantic drop me off at the Farmingdale LIRR train station and get off at the Jamaica station. Then proceed to JFK via the airtrain. Reverse to get back out. I just hope that someone is available at the FBO when I need picked up.

You may want to ask them what their rates for their cheapest rental car. At HPN I've gotten $35 rental cars, and they may be able to get you the same at Sheltair. That would be a lot better than the train.

You proposing some sort of dictatorship?

The most efficient form of government is a benevolent dictatorship.

The "benevolent" part is the hard one to come by.

But no, I just think R&W was indicating which box he's not going to check next November.

If only the opposition would field somebody non-ideologic and decently electable....

Keep hoping, doc. I'm not very optimistic that they will pull the swing vote with their current leading candidates.

You know, when I started the thread, I really dd want some input on what course of action would be better. Instead, it turned into a real president bashing.

Focus people, focus!:D:D

And the last several elections has certainly been trying to pick the best of the worst. I can't remember whose tag line says it, but I certainly agree with it:

Different pile, same stink, or something like that.

In a country where the Phrase " ALL MEN ARE CREATED EQUAL" it seems to me the prez should get the same benefits as all of us low life taxpayers.. :yesnod::yesnod: With that said, where does one go to request a TFR, I would love to have one when I drive through heavy traffic. :dunno:. And on the same note,,, where can I order up the same health care plan they have too ?.
