Wausau, WI (KAUW) 1/31/09 Chili

Kate, I happen to have a plane reserved for an IR lesson on that day from 1000 to 1400 - so I just went in and added KAUW to the route since we're in the XC phase. I'll see you there!

Weather permitting, I'll probably attend. Haven't done much flying lately, either too cold, too much snow or too much wind. Bad case of the terrible too's.

Kate, you need to be coming to fly-ins a bit closer to my home base. ;)

Have fun!

Hmm I'd love to go, but we are having our gliding club annual winter get together that afternoon.

Ooh, would be nice to finally meet you. I should be 15X, a red & white "fastback" 172 that looks almost just like the one in my avatar. Just look for the long-haired short girl. :)

Excellent. I'll be in a Skyhawk as well - N7861A. It's of course white (what isn't?) with some stripes - I don't recall now because I've been doing most of my IR work at night. :)

I wish I could come but I'm commited to attending a workshop on lake management from 9am to 5pm that Saturday. I'd really, really rather go flying.

I was in Wausau a little over a week ago. Speed limit drops from 65 to 55. Hmmm...I didn't notice. 72 in a 55. $185. Son, we take credit cards in this county...right now!

5 minutes later I was back on the road, $185 poorer and with my credit card receipt to prove it.

Oh well!

Why didn't ya fly? ;)

Oddly enough, I've driven that stretch a ton (my former company was right off exit 185), never got a ticket there.

I wish! It was 4 hours each way in one day (Appleton-River Falls-Appleton) to check out another project. My plane was in Missouri. The weather kinda sucks up here for flying this time of the year! I wanted to fly back up last Wednesday and the weather was great in MO and IL but low clouds were forecast all across WI. I don't do low clouds in the winter so I drove 8 hours...again.

I can't, I have a work meeting in the morning and then in the afternoon I am taking off for a weekend in downtown Chicago with a stay in my favorite 4star hotel and a meal at Everest, the best French restaurant, well the best restaurant in Chicago. http://www.everestrestaurant.com/

I've eaten there. Found it not bad but not overly impressive. Have you tried Charlie Trotter's?

Can't make it on the 31st because the annual Chicago Aviation EXPO is that day in Itasca. It is sponsored by the Chicago Area Chapter Ninety-Nines, Illinois Department of Transportation- Division of Aeronautics, Wisconsin Department of Transportation - Bureau of Aeronautics, Illinois Association of Air and Critical Care Transport (IAACCT) and FAA FAASTeam. More information on SPANS if you're interested.

Yes I have been to C. Trotters, IMHO that was way over hyped.

Agreed, but I could say the same about any high end restaurant, including Everest. In my opinion, there is a direct correlation between the higher the critics rating, the lower the amount of food and the higher the price! I get ****ed paying $45 for a "happy face" on my plate.

"......that the guy's only doing it for some gal....."

Hey, that's close! I can't be there.

Kate, I'll be coming on an IFR flight plan, with my CFII. In the event we are late (prior renter, refueling, etc.), and the chili is out, I may need to fly to an alternate - food stop that is. I need to keep my right seater fed. Do you know of any nearby airports (preferably east or south of KAUW) with on-field food options?

Stan,

The nearest one in the east-to-south quadrant would be Shawano (KEZS if your GPS database is up to date, 3WO if it's not - just changed a month or two ago). There's a couple of places right across the street from the FBO.

Closer to your route, OSH might be a better bet - Friar Tuck's, The Charcoal Pit, and I think there's a pizza place right there now too.

I still don't know for sure if I'll be there - Wisconsin Aviation is offering a free ground school for their "new" SR22 from 9-1. Kind of tempting. Of course, I don't know if I'll even be around to fly the Cirrus anyway. I'll probably decide tomorrow.

Thanks, Kent. We'll be going right over OSH. Hope to see you there, but I understand the Cirrus temptation.

Kent answered for me RE: $100 hamburger stops, but anyways, I am not liking the weather forecast so far. :( If I do go, I'd arrive about 11:30.

Stan,
Your graphic moves in time, so people can't see that the 10AM graphic shows pretty much the entire state northeast of a line from Milwaukee through Madison to have a probability of ice.

For those who opt not to go to Wisconsin, consider driving down to the Itasca Country Club for the free 2009 Aviation Expo. It even counts for Wings credit! See faasafety.gov for more info.

How about moving the whole get together to Sunday. At this point I think the wx looks really good (and I could come).

Hmmm. That's odd, Grant. Any idea how to copy the image without it changing?

Only by copying the actual image and hosting it yourself. What you posted is a link to the image. and that link is defined as the weather x hours out, not the weaher at a specified time. They update the image when the next prediction run is completed.

Im out to weather just looking good.
Maybe next time

OK, let's try this (fingers crossed):

Ron called me a wimp:D, so I'm not going. Well, that, the frz drizzle, and the wind gusts.

Tim

This is something I haven't seen on a TAF before:

From 12:00 AM: Wind 230° at 5 kts, Visibility greater than 6 SM, Overcast 1200, Wind shear at 1500´ from 250° at 30 kts

I'm a no-go as well, due to marginal weather and having two newbie flyer friends with me besides.

http://www.flywausau.com isn't advertising a "rain date," no.

A side note, I noticed the winds aloft at Grand Forks, ND (GFK) are forecast as 290@59 at 3000'

The best thing about today: we're supposed to see 32 degrees and haven't been out of the single digits and teens for weeks (with seemingly endless below-zero wind chills). I'm gonna go put my shorts on...

Roger that. I like chili, but ...

We may go south to MLI since I have the plane for 5 hours.
