Ames, IA November 29, 2008

Not sure where you are in SoCal, but can you get to Vegas easily at all? Allegiant flies non-stop from LAS to DSM daily. You could come in on the 28th around noonish and return about the same time on Sunday or Monday for $191 round-trip.
I have some other commitments on the 28th, so I'd have to leave on the 29th and Allegiant doesn't have flights on Saturday. I'll probably just pay for 29-1st, but I wish I had booked those tickets on Tuesday!

We could probably throw you in the 182 on the way home, Felix.

I'm looking @ rooms at the Grandstay. http://www.grandstayames.com

According to their web site there is still pretty good availability.

Before I book anything, Tony--- can you get any sort of deal with them that would make the rates lower? I would be using AAA which lowers it a decent amount, but before I book I'll want to know if you've got some special plan going.

kate,

i dont. i was having trouble getting a good gauge on how many would need rooms, and from last time they would only do a block deal with multiple days. so im leaving it up to you guys. book away.

The last time we did a block rate the price really wasn't any lower.

"Uh, what time zone do you think this iz?" :skeptical:

If the new Price Waterhouse Coopers ad comes on TV, watch it closely.

They have 6-8 clocks around the world on the wall, the the hands spinning and showing that the time of day in Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York each differ by 2-3 hours and 12-42 minutes. :dunno:

They're talking about how you, Mr. Businessman, can to be confident when you let them do your taxes. :fingerwag:

It'd probably be easier logistics wise if everyone stayed at the same hotel.

Do we want to just book at the Grand Stay Ames? I have no preference, whatever works for everyone else.

Ted, yeah. The GrandStay has great rooms (& suites) at a pretty reasonable price for what you get. You could pretty much live there. That's what I plan on booking. Still waiting to figure things out, but some of the rooms have 2 bedrooms plus a sofa sleeper.

Sounds good, I'll book myself a room there.

Geez, they have some pretty awful cancelation policies. I'm wondering if I wouldn't be better off just not booking anything and dealing with it when I get there. Need to cancel by 3 PM the day BEFORE arrival?!

Either way, I've got a room booked, hoping the weather agrees on my travel plans.

ted,

i dont think there's much going on that weekend in town. most of the college kids will still be home for thanksgiving. no football or anything. probably a pretty safe bet you could get a room somewhere if you just showed up. we'd make sure you didnt sleep outside at least.

Well, I already booked it but I'll be checking the weather on Turkey day and be ready to cancel if it looks like it might not work.

Sleeping outside would suck - the Tanis heaters probably wouldn't keep me very warm.

Yeah I'd rather not sleep outside.

However, there's lots of other options in college towns in case hotels don't work ;)

Yeah, see how the "Hey baby I fly a P-Baron..." pick-up line works.

Interestingly, when I was with a group this week and explaining to them what the Animal Rescue Flights I do are, I jokingly said "I fly sick puppies for free so they can get help." One of the guys looked at me and said "That is the best pick-up line ever."

There is a Holiday Inn and a Baymont right there in the same block as the Grandstay. Both are pretty nice places. If anyone needs a ride from the motel to the airport, or from the airport to the motel, let me know. I'll be around. Send me a pm, and I'll give you my cell number.

Well..Ted, I'm not sure that the plane line would work. The line about hurt puppies on the other hand.....

This sounds like the makings of a Mythbuster's challenge that we can test next weekend in Ames.

Bah--all those girls care about are boy bands, pot, and ecstasy.

1.) Tell the girl you live in your parents basement
2.) Look like ****, don't shower or anything, dress in weird ass punk band clothes
3.) Tell them you love your marijuana.

Do the above--you can pick up about any girl from Ames :)

Orrrr..... Wear cowboy boots, a John Deere cap, and drive a truck with a fake set of brass cow balls hanging from the hitch and you're in like.... uhhh... a guy wearing cowboy boots and JD cap...

A select few might be into that depending on their origin. But all the Ames/Des Moines city girls? Hell no.

Correct. The Ames/Des Moines chicks won't go for it, but you gotta realize ISU is an Agricultural school as well - the entire north end of campus is Ag stuff - so the women's rodeo team is a big deal up there. ;)

I suppose so. I've never ran into that crowd during my Ames/Des Moines excursions.

We can change that if you want. I've probably got a spare JD cap you can borrow. You're on your own for cowboy boots and fake brass cow balls, though. :D

Naw, you have it all wrong.

Wear a floppy hat and tell 'em you fly gliders ("...I can get it up without power!").

I wonder if Ames and Davis (my college town) are one and the same. Look at these pictures - there's a small airport south of the city, as well as two major roads, a golf course to the north, the campus in the southwest corner, numbered streets, and both campuses are very agricultural, with Davis having the #1 vet school (the campus used to be called "The Farm" when it was part of UC Berkeley).

I can only assume that all the restaurants and sororities are in the same area!

Just want to confirm- this is at KAMW? Which hangar? About what time are things starting?

Thanks much!

yea, KAMW is it.

the hangar a big tan hangar, facing east. it has big block letters on it that say "Hap's Air Service"

see you there!

Scott, I'm planning on arriving on Friday. Just look for the plane that's got its 70s paint job falling off of it and a backwards tail. The 182RG parts, those are another matter entirely. :)

Is anyone flying from the Chicago area and leaving around noon on Saturday? I'm still trying to avoid driving across - if I do so, I'll be there around 4pm. Hope that's not too late!

-Felix

4 pm will be fine felix. looking forward to seeing you either way
