Well,.. it's time to start looking for Youth Headsets for my daughters. Tonight I went to Wings Field to meet up with Bob for a bit, and brought my family along. We watched a few planes come and go, and Ally said she wants to go flying. :) She's been with me before in a plane on the ground, without the engine running. It was a great night, and then my wife says,.. "so,.. are we going?" "Well, if I had my bag and the rental office was open, I would take you up on it" I said.

Time to get them in the plane for a trip down the taxiway and runway, and if all goes well, a hop around the pattern. One step at a time right,.
While there, Andrew departed with his daughter Stephanie, and she was his personal ground crew. Loading baggage, untying the wing ropes,.. it was a great moment. Someday soon....

So, I'm looking now at these... Pilot USA Youth Headsets (Pink) . Any PIREPs out there on these or another Youth Headset? What I like about these, is that they can be upgraded to Adult headbands for free later (according to the website now anyway)

I sold one to a friend a couple years ago for his son. He seemed to believe it did the job right.

I'm not sure it is correct or not. My grandkids have an overhead DVD screen to watch movies on (Like a car). They use noise canceling headsets from a stereo, I use an adapter so it fits. If they want to talk they use a hand mic. You have to get a set that has volume control. about the same as using the Bose Q.

Do you really think your child is going to want those colored ear cups when they get to be "big kids" and need adult headbands?

You might also consider the AvComm headset. It's a bit cheaper and doesn't have stereo but it does have a port for plugging in an MP3 player. And the earcups are white now which is a little bit more neutral. I think Headsets Etc has the best price - click Add to Basket to get their real price. A place I rented at for awhile told me they bought AvComm for rental purposes because, like a Timex, they can "take a beating and keep on ticking."

From their literature:
Adjust it small enough for a young child or expand it easily to fit smaller adults, or even add an optional full-size head band and ear seals for a full-size headset. AVCOMM's specially designed ear seals for the AC-260 PNR fit closely to a child's ear, since larger ear seals would fall below the jaw line and greatly reduce noise attenuation. A new added feature is a port to plug in a MP3 player for your child's entertainment.

Disclaimer: Be aware that headset comfort is a personal thing. I've worn an AvComm for 5 hours with no discomfort but can't guarantee that others would feel the same way. (OK, there was considerable discomfort on that flight but it was from the crappy seat in the 152.)

I got those as spares a private label from Marv Golden:

with the adult headband and the price is better.

Many a Young Eagle wore those. They're fine. I have Pilot 17-79 ANRs that are good, too.

Looks like Marv Golden went to a generic web store. How much you wanna bet they got hacked?

We bought my son the ones from Sporty's - I think they are Sigtronics. They come with a headband that allows them to fit him as he grows. Great headset.

Here's the thing about kids head sets. Kids grow out of them. I toyed with the idea for my daughter but ended up using Adult headsets for her when she was 7 or 8 I know the fit wasn't great but I also put those foam ear plugs in her ears. For the little bit she flew it wasn't worth the kids head sets. That being said if your going to get them buy them used.

I'm looking on Ebay and on the AOPA Classifieds, none to be found used so far.

My daughters are about to turn 4, so I'm thinking if I can take them up around the pattern and they enjoy it, I'll purchase a headset for them as they will be able to use them for 5-6 years. I have a feeling that Ally will be more of my flying buddy, as she always is interested in going with me and she loves sitting in the planes (C152, Ted's Archer, Bob's C172, without hesitation). Bella on the other hand, may surprise me, but doesn't like the planes as much and doesn't like the noise. So maybe two headsets aren't needed, just one for now, we'll see.

With twins, my wife is always in need of a break, so when one of the girls becomes comfortable, I'm sure I'll be taking her with me when I go to the airport for some local flying. Becky is more interested in going places, not as much burning holes in the sky.

The Pilot Cadet has an adjustable headband and you can replace it with an also adjustable adult-sized band.

My daughters (7 and 12) use David Clark Youth H10-13Y. My wife can also wear it for short flights, if I take out some of the padding on top of the head. Plus they're upgradable as the kids grow.
