Need some help folks. My helicopter build is coming along nicely and its time to reserve a number. My initials are DR, but that may be a little to much say as I'm probably going to be to scared to talk anyway.:eek: The helicopter is a Mosquito XE3. So how about some suggestions?

I find the easiest tail numbers to say or for ATC to pick up on are those which repeat the first two digits (e.g., N2323H). Just my opinion. :)

I feel for ya. My first few flights in my Pitts I had a hard time spitting out "three quebec quebec."

I tend not to like N numbers that have two letters at the end if the first one ends in a vowel and the second begins in a vowel.
 
why not November Delta Romeo Three?

that rolls off the tongue pretty easily.

some letters are just easier to say more quickly.

one plane I flew ended with Alpha-Victor. very easy.

another one ended with Papa Bravo. sounds silly but when you are talking fast that doesn't always come out well. I think if you avoid the letters that require your lips to meet, it's easier to say fast - Mike, Papa, Bravo would be a pain if you strung them together.

Because the FAA won't allow it. You can't have a number after a letter in a tail number. Valid formats are:

(most or all ov the above are reserved or used)

Just curious... are you helicopter rated yet? The reason I'm asking is that there is a guy at my home airport who is building a Rotorway and is planning to get his primary instruction and helicopter add-on rating at the Rotorway factory.

That's too bad - I would have chosen 1BUG ... it IS a mosquito, right? :D
 
I would prefer characters that flowed much easier off the tongue as well as easy to recall. One of the planes I used to fly was Skyhawk Eight-Two-Two-Tango-Kilo.

I never met the owner's wife nor knew how encouraging she was. But, her birth date and initials sure made for a tongue twister for myself and for ATC during fourteen hours of cross-country.

Not rated. Am going to read a book.:D
Just kidding, was looking into some flight schools in the Phoenix area though. I heard that Rotorway has a couple 300's, most mosquito owners say that they handle very close to the XE so that may be a good location. Was thinking about paying for a block of 10 hours up front, and flying out there for few days and at least get up to snuff on hovering. Accept for the required dual, wont time in my experimental count toward a rating? Keep working on that number.;)

That's true. Triple nine, three, zero was the plane I spent a lot of time in back in Ames. Whiskey Whiskey is also a fun and easy ending.
 
I've already got the coolest N-number ever reserved....N999NN. Next one in coolness would be N999UU.

Tongue tie the ATC!
 
So far as I know, time in your experimental should count just like any other time under the part 61 requirements for the PP-RH add-on.

I'm partial to the Bravo Zulu idea for the Mosquito. Delta Romeo isn't bad either. I guess it's a matter of taste but I like letter-letter at the end. I guess most of the airplanes I have flown in the past 10-15 years have been like that. Some letter combinations definitely work better than others, however. I've flown a pair of Bravo Echoes which works well; Juliett Charlie, not so much so.

I have the controls nearly completed. Dropped the main mast assembly in last week, completed the mixer. I'm having a lot of fun building it, but it ain't like any airplane I've built before.:eek:

N numbers may not exceed five symbols in addition to the prefix letter "N." These symbols may be all numbers (N10000), one to four numbers and one suffix letter (N1000A), or one to three numbers and two suffix letters (N100AB). The letters "I" and "O" may not be used. The first zero in a number must always be preceded by at least one of the numbers 1 through 9.

You also want to avoid having lotsa syllables, although Nick got the longest he could think of just to do the opposite.

Seven-Seven-Seven-Si-ER-A-Rom-E-O

I guess the longest you can get is 3 sevens (or niners) with 2 3-syllable letters.
 
Delta Romeo isn't bad. I would find a couple of numbers that have some meaning to you and go with it. NxxDR.
 
Also no I's or O's (only 1's an 0's) and the first digit can't be 0.
 
If it weren't for the other Nick, I'd have totally reserved N1CK. Still thinking someday I might grab N17RO (looks like Nitro).
 
Well, reserved N472DR. 72 has been my call sign for a dozen years, both on the ground, and in the air. 2DR rolls off the tounge pretty easy. Now I just need to learn to fly the contraption.

I had N1RN reserved for a while, it's my amateur radio call sign. But I let it lapse and some guy in Indiana put it on a glider.

Try the change of address in the registration section as if you had the plane.

If that doesn't work just call the registration office in OKC.

BTW, the airman section and the aircraft sections do not share any data. You have change your address at both. They might as well be separate agencies.
