It’s time to work on plans for the upcoming year. Here are a few things I hope/plan to do:

* Fly low and slow to California in the Citabria and visit Joe Areeda and Stephen Gray to name a few.
* Write a book about my grass strip tour.
* Take at least 20 Young Eagles flying.
* Spend a weekend at Gaston’s in June flying and visiting with my aviatin' friends.
* Spend 10 days at OSH, camping under the Citabria wing
* Be a mentor to at least 5 pilots.
* Compete in at least one aerobatic competition.
* Learn to fly at least one new and different airplane.
* Maybe work on getting my CFI.

This is just a start on the list.

What are some of YOUR aviation goals/plans for 2008?

1. Get my instrument rating.

(I like to start with a reachable goal, though I'm humbled by your list, Diana!)

Diana - your list looks like a lot of fun. I wish I could list as many pure pleasure outings and ways to give back as you have. This year looks like more training for a newb pilot. I would like to:

1. Get my Complex Endorsement
2. Get my Instrument rating
3. Fly to Oshkosh (I promised myself in 2001 I had to fly-in the next time)
4. Make 3 or more Ponca city pancake runs
5. Log 100 PIC hours this year

1. Participate in at least 5 of Frank "The Exile" Holbert's fly-ins.
2. Add atleast 4 hrs to the "complex" column.
3. Learn to fly a GPS approach
4. Keep my IR current with actual only (tough to do in SoCal)
5. Send a "Thank You" card with a "testimonial" letter to SoCal (meant to do this for 2 years)
5b. Mail a chocolate bar to my fmr CFII. (Did my IR with her. She likes chocolate)
6. Navigate to and land at 3 unfamiliar airports using pilotage and DR only.
7. Visit the Pt. Magu, Edwards AFB, or MirMar airshow.
8. Try a tandem skydive (depends on $$ and other conditions)
9. Take atleast 2 aero-virgin pax up with me & say "Hey, watch this!".
10. Talk to SoCal instead of playing dodge the Jet Blue. Supposedly SoCal hates it when we fly outside, but near c-space without talking.

Im going to try to get the ATP knocked out. 23 on April 7. More multi time i guess. Hopefully a 135 gig.

Take delivery of a Comanche
Have my first student pass his checkride
Land in North Dakota and Alaska - giving me 49 of the 50 states being traveled to via GA.
Get tailwheel endorsement
Get ASES
Get CFII
Try and get more than 1 PoAer south of Iowa to visit 6Y9 - not counting on it - evidently we're not "good enough" for the southern folks.
Start work on ferry tanks for said Comanche so I can say I have flown TO every state via GA. Yes, fly a Comanche to Hawaii.
Top the 700 hour mark.

1.Break 500 hours (125 to go).
2.Fly more Young Eagles/First timers.
3.Fly enough missions for the Coast Guard Auxiliary to remain qualified.
4.Get IFR.

If I get the Ercoupe bought, I will plan a trip up. I just can't make the Labor Day fly-in, my job will not allow me to take summer holidays off. Maybe Diana will the trip too.

Here's mine:
  • Close on a partnership deal in an SR22 in first half of January (offer is out, partnership agreement is in writing and we're on the hangar waiting list)
  • 3 week honeymoon in said plastic airplane hitting National Parks across the country and starting or ending at Gaston's '08.
  • Finish and give my private pilot and instrument ground school courses.
  • Get my next rating maybe 2, which will be MEI, Glider PP, or ASES PP or COM.
  • Sign off (and pass) my first CFI candidate.
  • Reduce the number of serious student pilots from 8 to 4 so I have more time for personal flying.
  • Fly more in helicopters.
And while it's not a goal, another aviation event will probably be to sell my half of the T28. So those of you who want a ride but haven't had one better start planning your trip to SoCal.

Joe

Add at least 5 to the number of airplane types I've flown. (Now at 45.)
Maintain better IFR proficiency.
Go to more Gaston's type fly-ins.
Try to re-learn how to like Sun n Fun and OSH.

My list is modest
  • Don't break the airplane
  • Don't annoy ATC
  • Stay safe & current
  • Don't annoy other pilots

Will you still have it in May when we get out there? BTW, Tom said just the other day that he is looking forward to flying over to Catalina with you.

I guarantee it won't be gone until Tom gets his ride, but we'll probably do Catalina in the Cirrus.

Joe

1. Hit 500 hrs (60 to go)
2. Make the trip to Newfoundland again to visit my parents (and hopefully this time put France in the log book).
3. Get my CFII (however my wife is fighting me on this one - not sure why)

Joe - it will be just as easy for you to get Commercial Glider add on as Private. Just 10 more solo flights. Then you can go right to CFI-Glider.

nice list! I hope to follow everyone's progress as they check off the tasks!

mine are pretty basic...

  • renew my medical (let it lapse over a year ago when my wife was diagnosed with a brain tumor)
  • get back in the saddle again
  • rework the budget to include some monthly flying hours/dollars once again
  • rework the work/home/recreation priorities to include flying

I wish I could say my list was as magnanamous as Diana's...mine's a bit more self serving.

1. Stop procrastinating and take the ATP written.
2. Pick up as many weekend shifts as I can.
3. Get at least 1,800 hours by June
4. Put my first entry of PIC-Turbine in the log book.
5. Put a lot more PIC-Turbine entries in the log book.
6. Transition to the Q-400.
7. Get checked out in a SE again.
8. Take friends and family flying more often.
9. Become rich and famous. If there's time.
9.5. Steal Ken Ibold's job.
EDIT: 10. Go flying with Tony, because we've talked it about it for about 5 years now, but still never have (other than that time in glider with all the circling...)

The CGA doesn't require the IFR rating to fly for them?? Do you have a web page for them? What are their missions and requirements like?

* Start and obtain my CPL
* Renew Medical
* Find a foxy single lady who owns a TBM 850 and date her :D
* Camp with the PoA Klan at OSH
* Of course go to Gaston's (in the TBM)
* Make more $$ so I can blow more $$ on aviation

1) Fly to Gastons with my wife! (#1 on the list!)
2) Stop procrastinating and get my Commercial ASEL written done.
3) Take Garrett J. for his first airplane ride and get him started on lessons (I signed him up in the AOPA Mentor program a couple months back).
4) Start working on the Commercial maneuvers, pass checkride by mid-year.
5) Read Diana's book.
6) Find or make more $$$ so I can add more items to this list.

1) Stay married long enough to get to 18 years (this May) :D
2) Finish the dang IR (January?)
3) Get involved with the local EAA chapter
4) Make my third trip to Gaston's in June
5) Get my wife to travel via GA more often
6) Make my second trip to Wings
7) Add more Pitts time in the log book

Tell me more about this... that's within range for me, could meet you some morning. Where do you go for pancakes in Ponca City (I presume you mean Oklahoma)?

Ponca City has a breakfast the first Saturday of each month, rain or shine, snow or ice. On a nice Saturday you'll see hundreds of airplanes there. On bad days folks still drive in. Breakfast is pretty good for a fly-in, and only costs about $4 as I remember it. I'll make several of them again this year.

* Get CP-ASEL
* Get CFI
* Finish tailwheel endorsement
* Get checked out as tow pilot for those silly gliders at AMW
* Make it back to OSH this year
* FINALLY make it to Gaston's
* Return trip to 6Y9
* Get Rachel started on her PP-ASEL
* Push hard on working on RV-10 to get it flying by early 2009
* Biggie -- Finish B.S. degree by end of year so I can make more $$$ to spend on flying. :) This trumps everything else in the list at this point.

Get my commercial single and multi
Fly to the other coast and Panama in a multi
Get in some more IMC
Get a job flying

1) Stay married long enough to get to 18 years (this May) :D
5) Get my wife to travel via GA more often

Kevin,

Are #1 and #5 contingent on each other?

Congrats on the 18 years; my wife and I just celebrated 18 a week ago...

  1. Close on the Grumman Yankee
  2. Get current/legal again
  3. Go to at least one PoA fly-in
  4. Fly the pants off the Grumman (of course, it's already pant-less, so maybe this goal is overly optimistic [or, I can already cross it off!])

You can always fly pantsless IN the Grumman. :)

I have a perfect PoA flying for ya around Labor Day.

4. Keep my IR current with actual only (tough to do in SoCal)

You'd be better off doing it under the hood. If the weather is rain showers you have to worry about ice. If it is marine layer you won't be in the clouds very long and it is rarely even close to minimums. Even full time professional pilots have trouble getting enough actual here to keep them current.

Hmm... pantsless... (Did I hear somebody say, "My eyes! My eyes!"?)

6Y9 is definitely under consideration... it's a 150hp Yankee... (of course, my attendance will, as ever, depend on business responsibilities)

150 in a Yankee, no problem. We'll have 2600 usable by Labor Day

I know what you mean. I've found that I've got to go up first thing in the morning to catch IMC most the time. I just hope that more actual will get me over my issue of flying too far over the ocean at night (pitch black w/o horizon). So far I only stay well withing gliding distance of the shore and keep visual contact when in vmc.

This is just a start on the list.

What are some of YOUR aviation goals/plans for 2008?

What an excelent example you are!

As for me:

Mentor at least three new pilots: help three get some twin time.
Get rated/qualified/proficient in a King Air.
Meet up with more POAers and folks on the Beechlist and AvSig.

Trips: Wisconsin several times--stop to see POAers when possible. Colorado skiing at least once; hopefully more.
South Carolina family visits and look at deals.
San Diego--friends and deals;
Fly in Hawaii--rent while on vacation.
Orlando for SIMCOM and to see family. IPC mid year.
Gastons of course.
At least one more flight in a jet as PIC.

POA goals:
Disagree on the board with at least one authoritative source several times on how things should be done
Keep Tony and Tim snowed as to my ability to work with my rightseater
Find any issue with which I disagee with Diana (this will be one of my biggest challenges :goofy:
See Adam when he has his real name tag on (also tough).
Buzz Gastons with at least two other folks flying the P-Baron.
See Carol T. soon!
Find one Lance Fisher Post that is short and I fully understand!!
Find out Ken I has flown a plane that can go non-stop more than 300 miles!
Find out Jesse has checked his mail more than once in a week!
Sorry, many more goals and not enough time to get them all down!!

Best,

Dave
