The wife, youngest son, and I are going on a recruiting visit this weekend to Brown University. Any advice on flying to KPVD, KOQU, or another airport would be much appreciated. Departing KSBY Maryland.

Both are good airports to fly into. North Central State is another, but it's about 10 miles north, so not as quick to Brown.

If you hit P-town, maybe take some extra time and get down to Newport? Fun scenic place to visit, the mansion row and tours are fun, etc. New England in the fall is a great place to be.

Yep. Last time I was up in Providence we flew into UUU got a car, walked around Newport, and drove around the bay up to the city.

PVD is a pretty easy Class C. Quiet most of the time and closest to the city. Not sure what the fees are these days but it shouldn't be too bad there. It should be a quick Uber/cab ride from there to anywhere in the city. Providence is kind of small so getting around shouldn't be much of a problem for you.

As far as the city goes Providence definitely has it's share of "bad parts" of town. I had my first drink at a real bar in Providence as it had well known underage illegal bars- not sure if they are still prevalent (I'm sure you wont be seeking those out to show your son ;)). It used to have a strong "wise guy" ie. Mafia presence in the city. Just google the former mayor Buddy Cianci to learn more.

However, the area around Brown has always been pretty nice with tons of shops/restaurants, etc. and there has been a concerted effort to try to clean up the rest of the town, to varying degrees of success. Be sure to go get some dinner and desert up on Federal Hill while you are there. Pretty good Northern Italian feed there and kind of a cool family friendly scene at night.

As others have said, Newport is a cool place to spend the day. If you want to go cheap - there's a city bus that'll take you to Newport from the terminal side of KPVD. It takes about an hour with all the stops, but it's only something like two bucks each way.

While I was serving at Quonset tower (we were there for the controller strike/firing) I was able to do flight instruction at a small flight school on the field. One time we flew off the coast line of Newport along mansion row. I mean these mansions were called "summer cottages" by their owners, and they're huge mansions! Fun area to fly around and site see too.

As neilw2 mentions about mafia types, I actually had a student who had mafia connections and told me a few stories over beer, and another Irish guy who took me to a private club after a lesson and told me about his connections providing funding for the IRA in Ireland. Uunbelievable, told him don't tell me this shet I'm in the military man.
