Is it because I'm a redneck?

First of all, I'm not a NASCAR fan. I'm a drag racing kind of guy, so rubbin' is not racin'.

Secondly, I believe the weapon of choice in the Harding-Kerrigan incident was a pipe, not a hammer.

Edit: I wonder if the pipe is on display at the museum.

You are going to Fredericksberg. You are staying at the Hangar Hotel (http://hangarhotel.com/).

You will retire to the hotel and hang out at the hotel bar and listen to all the old pilots tell their stories.
The next day you will take a wine tour.

You will go to the Fredericksberg brewing company (http://www.yourbrewery.com/) the second evening and you will order "The best ruben in town (http://www.yourbrewery.com/menu.pdf) for dinner.


In the mornings, you will drink coffee on the balcony and watch planes arrive and depart:

My vote is CO springs. If you and your wife are the adventurous type, I'd rent a GS1200. Ride through GOG, ride up Pikes Peak, ride over to Woodland Park, then over to Divide and then down to Cripple Creek and do a little gambling. Take back way from Cripple Creek to Canon City then up to Salida. Spend the night in Salida and get up early and go river rafting (you'll want to do class IVs) down the Arkansas for the day. Spend another night in Salida to recuperate from river rafting. Get up and head up to Buena Vista, over to Antero Junction, Hartsel, Divide, and back to the Springs. I guarantee it will be a mini-vacation you and your wife will never forget. :thumbsup:

Dang, that is a specific itinerary. It was also somewhat forceful. I think I like it.

So, when will you and Eren be meeting us there if we go?

Would it be okay if I replace the coffee with a glass of sweet tea? I hesitate to deviate from your instructions, but coffee is gross.

This would be a nice vacay, and I don't believe the wife has ever done or seen most of what you mentioned. Last time I rafted the Arkansas out of Salida, I was about 10 and I had the flu, but we still rocked some class IVs, and it's still my favorite rafting trip out of several. I think I'm due to go back. Neither of us have been "up on cripple creek". The rest of it sounds great. Last time we did a summer visit to the area we drove hwy 50 from Montrose over to Salida and down to Canon City. We thought about heading up to Buena Vista and over to see GOG, but as we were on the tail end of an 11 day, 13 state road trip that took us as far as Idaho, we were road weary and ready to head back to the plains. The 2 year old in the back seat was done with being on the road.

Petit Jean is RV Mountain one week a year, sometimes the same week as PoA goes to Gastons.

You've already got the two places I'd have offered, Port A to go to Amelia's Landing @Jay Honeck or Fredericksburg for the Hangar Hotel
 
Well, I ran all the suggestions by my wife, and it looks like she's diggin' Colorado Springs. I very much appreciate all your input. It really did help us make a decision.

@denverpilot I'll let you know when we're going to head that way and maybe we could hook up.

@SixPapaCharlie I'm sorry we're not going to follow you're itinerary on this trip. I feel like I'm letting you down.

Morning meet for breakfast at COS?

The bridge is open. More fun altho not cheap is the evening train ride with an excellent dinner. Check out the Royal Gorge train website. Downside is lack of transportation from the little airport 1V6. Either rent a car or get a cab, pretty much the same price. City/county attorney declared the airport cars are city/county property and non-employees may not use them. On the other hand, you fly right over Supermax.

After you pass the Colorado state line, make sure you're on FF or IFR. There are two USAF training facilities, KPUB and thr USAF Academy. The practice areas are not on either VFR or IFR charts. If I can find my copies, I'll post where you can download them. These are in addition to the published areas.

Welcome to Colorado and keep your eyes open because the Zoomies are heads down far too often.

Keep in mind that @denverpilot is a wimp about the hills. Just make sure your will is filed, your family stays at home, no more than half a fuel load and we'll go have some fun flying in the hills.

Clark, I wasn't sure if you were actually offering a morning mountain ride and/or a breakfast date, or just advising me to go early. So if you are in the area, I'd be glad to meet up, or fly, or eat, or whatever. That goes for you too, Murphey, if you are in the neighborhood. Forgive me guys, if you don't have your location listed, I don't know where most folks live.

We got about 25 Colorado folk within an hour's or so flight from Colorado Springs. There's a reasonably good restaurant a short walk from the GA FBOs. Unfortunately, the cockpit has been turned into storage for silverware, napkins, plates, etc.

We haven't made any final plans, but we're thinking maybe June 2nd-5th. That is tentative at this point, but I think we'll nail it down pretty quick. The date will have to be blessed by the keepers of the kiddos.

Actually I was offering to coach you through a mountain flight in your aircraft. It is a lot more fun when you are doing the flying yourself, sorta indescribable on a calm, clear morning. I should point out that I am not a CFI just a guy with a few hours above the rocks. Nate is a CFI now, well a MEI but in the pipe for single engine CFI so may be a better choice.

As for the trash talk, a true mountain training flight can get very interesting really quick. I generally don't do the close to terrain stuff but every once in a while ya gotta do a refresher. And no, I won't practice that stuff with other folks on board...but it's a good challenge.

Since he let you down, I've already shown this post to MY other half (some say BETTER half, but I digress...). I love the hotel and brewery idea, she loves the tacos and winery idea. Now I just gotta find something faster than a 172...
 
I was going to suggest Kansas City if you were wanting to stay a bit closer to home, but Colorado Springs is always nice, too. If you were going up to the Front Range around mid-late July, Cheyenne, WY hosts Frontier Days which is a neat event to see, even if you have no love for rodeo/western shows.

While I love Kansas City (and live here), I don't think it's a great tourist destination personally. There are a few things to see, but Colorado Springs is much nicer.

Interesting suggestion. I've never actually visited KC, but honestly, my perception was that there really isn't much to see and do there. Is it worth a visit? I'm all ears.

It just depends on what you like to do. If it's just visit some decent brewerys and great BBQ, and take in the area around the P&L district I think it's good for a 2-3 day trip. Not a bad location for family stuff, too (although his trip is explicitly child-less), with the KC Royals, Worlds of Fun, Bonner Springs Ziplining, etc. It's definitely not as much of a hiking/scenic destination like most of the Front Range areas, but I always like the downtown KC area for a quick weekend trip.

In truth, I was kinda hoping the wife would pick Fredericksburg. Then again, if you've never been to Pikes Peak, the Gorge, GoG, any of the cool places around Colorado Springs, I definitely see why she leaned that way for this trip. That said, I'd be up for a Hangar Hotel POA get together. Let's do it!

When you do come visit, the best venue to stay at is the Flying D Ranch. No planes, yet, but lots of tractors and fun for kids of all ages.
