The great conveyor belt

This is assuming brake off, right Dwight?
Missed this one. Right. Brake off, so the thrust is on the plane with nothing transfered through the wheels to the truck or from the truck to the plane. (other than negligable bearing friction)

In the cases where an airplane can take off and hang on the prop climbing straight up. This isn't due to the lift from the air thrown over the wing. This is pure thrust from the prop pulling the airplane up. More thrust than weight and up you go. You could remove the wings and it'd do it just the same.
So tell me, if a plane that can stand on it's tail and climb from 5,000 - 10,000 feet, were to be placed on a vertical frame on the ground pointing straight up; do you think you could apply full power, release the clamps, and fly out of vertical to horizontal flight? Like a Space Shuttle launch? It seems to me the power may be adequate, but the control would be near zero with no wind over the control surfaces. You would not even have enough control to keep from turning the plane opposite the prop. Or perhaps the prop wash would provide enough to get a little directional control out of the wings and tail. Someone with time in a Pitts may know. And perhaps the new Air Force jet fighter with those directional control jets could do it since it can change flight attitude through all sorts of "unusual attitude" situations to get guns/missiles on target.

I was actually thinking more of aircraft with a pilot in the plane, but that shows what is possible.

It's easy to build something small like that with that kind of a power to weight ratio. Not so easy to build that full size with a real pilot.

Being the genious you are at software.... I nominate you to write a flash presentation of the concept. It should be variable and work EXACTLY as as described in the original post. :D

And, NO attendants in pink dresses!

I think we're going to throw you in the White River on both Saturday AND Sunday at Gaston's this year. :D

Maybe we'll have you eat Nick's words with Habanero Tabasco too, since Nick seems to like the stuff so much. (Actually, so do I )

You seriously dug up a two year old internet debate (which you cross posted from thepilotlounge) just to see what you could stir up with us?

I've weighed in on this already, but theoretically the plane takes off. Realistically, the tires explode and everyone dies in a fiery crash.

Yup.

Which thepilotlounge cross posted from another forum..and so on Mr. Sierra Hotel.

No, it's more of a rite of passage for new members.

And no, he didn't dig it up just to stir something up with you... Note that it was originally posted here a year and a half ago. He was tryin' to stir us all up. And for continually reviving it, we are going to throw him in the river at Gaston's. :D

dude, jesse revives this post like every month or so

Hey Patch / IamBull

I'll play your game you rogue. Airplane would take off assuming no friction at the wheel bearings and the tires don't explode. Next question.

No, no, no!! Don't play along. Just ignore him and he'll wait another couple of months before he bumps this thread again. In the mean time we can live in peace.

(The White River is mighty cold that close to the dam Jesse.)

This thread is SO interesting!!!

You know, now that I think of it, I'm not so sure the airplane would take off unless it had a tailwind.

unfortunately by the time we remembered we were supposed to put jesse in the river we had been drinking too much and didnt care anymore. of course he will spend the early part of the year annoying us and then april and may being nice so that we forget again. this is how he makes his life decisions, on how people will remember him at Gastons

Tony, as you get older, you'll come to realize: there are worse standards, and many who adhere to them!

Uh oh, Jesse...I think Tony's on to you...

So I didn't see it before but I like the illustration of the hypothetical large scale conveyor belt airport. I think it throughly explains the physics of what happens in relation to the air and not the ground. Not only this but it raises a question on how productive one may be in helping to save wear and tear on wheels and the engine. Could it also be possible to create one that calculates the exact speed on final and touch down in which no wheels are needed at all? If you can catch a paper airplane gracefully in the palm of your hand and slow it to a stop, why not a real one (figuratively speaking)?

Yes, you could...

I'm not sure how landing without wheels turning would save wear on the engine.

As for the wheels...how much do they cost, and how much would such a gizmo cost to land on? ;)

Well if we just all went to VTOL, problem solved.

Or tractor beams :D

So, how come nobody's sent this to Mythbusters for a demo?

(Maybe we need auto-thread locking on keywords... like "conveyor"...)

I'm sure it's been sent numerous times, but don't know if they've got the budget for it :D
