So I kicked this idea off a few people here and all thought it was a great idea. It accomplishes at least two things: Giving us yet another reason to fly, and two, getting you out from behind your computers and meeting some fellow PoA people. And for those of you with sociophobia this might be more up your alley - because you don't have to go to a fly-in.

I think this is an outstanding idea!!!

This needs a sticky or dedicated area for tracking results.
 
could get complicated. Willing to give it a try.
 
I'm in but 6PC doesn't get to hump my leg unless there's hookers and blow.

I am not sure it is doable in CA. There are a few airports you could change one letter and find another, but most designators are some part or abbreviation of the name (LHM-Lincoln, CA, AUN-Auburn, MYV-Marysville, MRY-Monterey).

That's why I made that page in the first post. You would have to leave California. AUN gets you ZUN in NM, and from there you can go to OUN (Actually did a similar flight)

Plus that page would help in what places NOT to pick!
 
Sounds like it could be a fun excuse to fly. I'm in

I guess I don't understand the legs then. CA to NM would be quite a haul. Are you suggesting a relay between the two legs (so more than one person would be involved in completing a single leg)? AUN to ZUN would be over 630 miles (over 730, going the most logical route, down the valley).

Some flights might be longer than others. Might be a good excuse for a weekend getaway. And there's nothing to say from AUN, you have to fly DIRECT to ZUN. Just that a single pilot has to start from AUN and end up at ZUN to meet another pilot. Make 3-4 fuel stops on the way if you want. Though I don't know what there is to do in ZUN, so maybe AUN isn't the best choice to start. O69 might be a better jumping off point.

XNA in Arkansas might not be the best starting point either.
 
Hmmm... That first step out of MRY looks like a doozy.

I'm totally down but agree w should be able to break down some legs between pilots.
If I can only fly half way, I find another poaer and spoilt the leg.
Doesn't hurt the overall idea here.
 
The overall relays(if 2 concurrent) should be roughly the same distance

My home airport of 77S has some reasonable legs. Nothing reasonable for anyone in nearby EUG, though.

I just got off the phone with Bryan about this, and no there will not be a garden gnome instituted again. He laughed at all the shenanigans that went on with Hayden being an unknown stowaway and the like. Only requirements are a picture with a fellow PoA person and the letter identifier change.

Jim - in regards to the EUG identifier, yeah, there are going to be a few airports around the country that are not really great for this thing. MIA(mi) is another one - so is NQA outside of Memphis. So I added an identifier jumble, so now at least MIA could go to MAI. Doesn't really help NQA out much though.

Also, just because you are based at a "bad" airport doesn't mean you can't participate. If someone is based at EUG, they just wouldn't use that as a link in the relay. But there are other airports nearby that might be a good meeting place. S12 for example "connects" to 7 other airports in WA or OR and 4 more in ID.

Keep in mind you aren't flying directly from S12 to wherever. I might meet you at S12. Then go back to EUG. Then fly to S16 a week later to meet TomD. And then Tom heads back to wherever he is based for a few days, and then takes off for W16 after that.

how 'bout we step it up a notch.

same concept you're proposing, but form two 'teams' to compete against each other, AND.............each team has their own kilo of blow and case of moonshine. the first team to get said packages delivered untouched and in tact using the MOST PoAers WINS, and has one heck of a celebration party! on the flip side, you could argue for the first team to use every last drop of shine and blow with the LEAST amount of PoAers wins.

point deduction for ramp checks and DEA encounters.

additional points awarded for pics of crack ho's sitting right seat while jonesing for a line.

no points deducted for checking into rehab.

Naw, the only thing required in Colorado is that you drive with your blinker on or that you run red lights.

O69 is an excellent jumping off point. I'm in. I like your webpage. Pretty neat options for O69.

I'm still trying to figure out the race part of it. Bryan threw that at me last minute, and I hadn't really figured out victory conditions.

I will see if the moro, er, management council can make a sticky thread once I post the guidelines in a more straightforward manner. Probably will make a FAQ page over the next couple days, and then we can get this launched.

I thought it would be fun to have 1 relay from east to west and another at the same time from west to east.

The race part may be a not good idea with weather and all. We don't want to encourage people to push it.

Also, you have a king air vs a 150 and well not a level playing field.

So anyway ed, feel free to take that part out of the equation. My wheels were spinnin.

This "relay race" idea seems to be EdFred's way of getting PoA pilots to physically meet up to punch embrace each other and sing Kumbaya. Oh all right, no way would he characterize it that way in this or any alternate reality.

 Looks like you're new here, so just to let you know this isn't the first sort of "challenge" that has been proposed and run. Here is is an older challenge where pilots were challenged to fly to airports and be the first to "claim" them: http://www.operationfly.com/
Go to the Maps/Reports menu and select View Maps, then select New Jersey. The airfields in red are claimed, the blue ones are not. I think Nick said he was shutting it down but I'm not sure if he has followed through yet. If not for that challenge, which I discovered years after it first started, I would not have flown into a bunch of neat airports in Oregon. Many of the paved ones had been "claimed" by the time I started out, which turned out to be a great thing for me - since most that were left were cool out-of-the-way grass, dirt, or crushed lava strips. A little scary at first trying to land at some, but pleasantly satisfying afterwords.

But, it's my understanding that you don't have to be based at either end of the leg to fly the leg. Someone based at EUG could fly over to 77S...meet the "arriving party"...then fly one of those "reasonable legs" to meet the "departing party."
 
Sweet. I get Shreveport as my closest airport.
If something is going E/W in the south, I could make a weekend out of that.
