Enroute from 3MY to KCOU VFR at 4500, Kansas City Center says "Traffic 11 O'clock, F-15 at 5500 north east bound"

"Ummm looking for traffic"

We finally saw him, but not for long. He was moving pretty quick. About 15 minutes later the controller from KC center asked what it looked like seeing a F-15 that close and that low. :D

That's awesome.. I would have said I tried to overtake him but he was a little faster than me LOL Pics ??

Over Norfolk in my Tiger, I had the controller advise me that I had another Grumman, an F-14 at my six o'clock. I thought to myself, "well what the heck am I going to do about that". :D

This was when F-14's were still in service of course, so several years ago. I never saw him.

I have had T 38 Talon, A4 Skyhawks and a Mig 15 on the pattern with me , at different times, at KLAL (Draken International).

Cheers

Coming into Albuquerque, approach called traffic for me, a North American P-51, 12 0'clock, will be climbing through your altitude.

Saw one opposite direction, at Red Flag, back in the 80's. We were in a C130, 300' AGL. He was a bit offset, a few feet lower. The closure rate was surreal, almost cartoon like. I just couldn't get my head around how fast he went from a "dot" to a pretty big airplane. We was flabbergasted.

Mary and I shared the pattern with two F-15s at the Quad Cities Airshow, 15 years ago.

I don't know what they were doing, but it was totally unrelated to what we were doing. We were flying -- they were...space ships, moving at speeds we could not fathom.

They cut across in front of us so quickly, it was like we hadn't moved and they were already on the other side of the airport.

The fact that they were going "slow" only highlighted how different we were from them. It was really cool!

Cruising at 3000 north ish waiting to intercept a practice approach, "Cessna nxxxx traffic 2 o'clock 2 miles west bound 2500 c130"

It was Fat Albert. I called it out as "fat Albert in sight" he crossed maybe 1/2 mile ahead and below. Was super cool. Got a chuckle from the controller.

If I ever hear that radio call, I'll just make sure maintain my altitude and hope for the best. :D

Have had f15 go under me while I was VFR up the east coast. Also run into c130 traffic all the time in the Tampa area.

I had the pleasure (OK, terror) of landing in front of a KC-135 tanker once. I was in my 1966 C172 on final and I looked out the back window and saw this massive machine several miles back with 4 trails of black smoke like some kind of 4-headed dragon bearing down on me. They asked me to exit first taxiway and buddy I made a textbook short field and got off not long before that thing came over the threshold.

In fact, I think that may have been during my first cross country in that airplane, flying it from TN to TX. I'd have to look up which field that was - it was one of those dual use airports obviously.

I know both those airports....what were you doing in Columbia? My kid goes to school there.

On the first leg of my cross country flight a couple weeks ago I had an Osprey pass just off our wing 500' below, rotors full forward. That was a cool way to start the trip.

I flew by one of my buddy's a few years ago... he got no traffic calls from what I understand. :)

Base at 3MY, flew into KCOU to pickup a truck I bought. Car shopping as a pilot opens the market search area up quite a bit.

Many, many years ago, I was flying up and down the Chicago lake front when Meigs Tower (I did say it was a long time ago) gave me a traffic alert of two approaching F-16's making a high speed pass along the lake shore. I was about to reply letting them know I was going to get out of there, when we got the: Traffic no longer a factor. We never saw them, I can only hope they saw us.

Evil the top pic the intake door is down more than the bottom left. Did you say that was an AoA or airspeed thing?

See Doc Bruce much?

All the time, in fact I went out to fuel the plane tonight (was too lazy yesterday) and he was driving around the ramp in circles.... I think he was setting the compass in his car.

Waiting for an airshow to end at KLVK years back tower advised me that I should hold at Altamont Pass and be aware that there was a MIG-19 circling 1000 ft above me. Cocked a wing up and sure enough there he was banking into a wide turn.

I bet that was something. We GA folk thump our chests over 150 or even 200 knots. Kinda puts things in perspective knowing how stupid fast those planes are.

Many many moons ago enroute from FAWK (Waterkloof AFB in Pretoria, South Africa) to FACT (Cape Town Int'l) in a C130, cruising happily along at FL280... Heard Concorde call for descent out of FL600... We called descent about 2 minutes later...

We flew the ILS into FACT and he was parked on the ground as we did the go around! Insane seeing that machine!

I can top all that.

Coming out of Torrance about 10 years ago, headed for Sandy Eggo; "spamcan 123, traffic 5 miles 10 o'clock, Blimp at 1500 kind of sitting there".

'Yeah, approach -- traffic in sight, no factor. Spamcan 123.'

As most things go, it depends. In general, it's more of an airspeed thing. The ramp system is actually three ramps, the big one you are talking about plus two internal ramps that stick down into the airstream when going very fast to route most of the air out the top of the fuselage. This is to keep the air at the engine face subsonic so it doesn't stall. It constantly adjusts at all airspeeds and altitudes- even low and slow - to maximize engine effectiveness. (and sometimes changes based on very high AOA).

Blimp...haven't seen a blimp. Did see a zeppelin. KLVK tower called out https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Airship_Ventures to me while I taking off 25R and it was coming in for landing opposite direction to midfield grass. Too bad that outfit didn't survive. I should have scheduled a flight but never got around to it before they dissolved.

The one I liked the best, though, was KNUQ tower calling out "Boeing, 3 mile final for 32, 11 o'clock opposite direction. You may want your camera for this one." I was flying solo at the time, so no pics. But I did fly in it later!

Cool. Thanks.

Flying through Seattle airspace shortly before Seafair a few years ago, I heard Approach issue traffic to someone as " ... a Blue Angel F-18 climbing through 9,000 over the departure end of the runway ... "

:D

Blimp...haven't seen a blimp.

The Goodyear Blimp (the big one) just happened to be moored at the airport where I was learning to fly many moons ago. It decided to depart as I was departing for my FIRST SOLO. That thing really fills the windscreen! :D Forced the tower to instruct me to make right traffice (normally left pattern), but it turned out to be uneventful.

Ben:

I am reminded of the story you told at Gaston's about the intercept over P49 (Crawford), your wing trying to read the tail number of a Cessna...
"...N!... that's all I got!" :D

Hope to see you at 3M0 this year!

Back when I was doing touch and goes practicing for my practical test, CID tower started talking to an E-6B command and control plane about doing pattern work. Before I knew it I got the cleared for the option after the heavy beware of wake turbulence radio call. As a student pilot, I was sweating pretty good watching where that beast touched down. It was pretty cool to be in the pattern with a big 707 doing VFR touch and goes though.

Wash center calls out traffic at 1800 feet, yes two hundred below passing down my left side a pair of F18's. I see a reflective shine, something off my ten o clock and advise I have the F18's in sight and at that moment as they pass through my eight o clock I could now see the second aircraft tucked in tight to the lead aircraft's right wing. Crappy shot with my old iPhone, but fun to see.

One of the rare instances on the internetz where the picture is just too fricken small....

Gary, all I see is a picture of a bunny with a pancake on its head.

MYF and Miramar are only 3nm apart. Flown very loose formation with F18's, C130's, Ospreys, choppers while downwind many times.
