This kind of blows me away. Not sure if this video has been discussed on here or not, but here it is. I was always under the impression you couldn't video the check ride, but it looks like this guy did.

Can't use a sectional to navigate. Unable to handle the diversion without GPS, or get frequencies off the sectional.

Does not know what the PTS is.

Calling for the tower at an uncontrolled field.

No checklist usage during emergency landing.

I was just certain at each point the examiner would finally say something, but nope. In the comments it says he passed. I am kind of floored.

What do you guys think?

Holy smoke.
I was sure he'd be busted just a few minutes in, and at some point just stopped watching.
If this guy is let into the wild, makes me cringe to be up there with him.
The issue IMO is not this poor hapless student, it's his instructor, chief pilot/school and the DPE (the latter for not busting him immediately).

Are the requirements for Sport Pilot more lax than Private Pilot? I'm not familiar with the differences between the two.

Yikes. That was rough to watch, especially during the power off stalls.

Was this a real check flight ,or a video to disgrace the sport pilot rating? Can't be for real.

I've heard some checkrides are more an opportunity for a DPE to teach than they are a strict test to pass or fail, but this is ridiculous. Maybe he was lenient because he though the guy was military. Sheesh, talk about your "license to learn"....

I actually came across this video several months ago and I agree, this guy seems like he's really behind the 8 ball.

He sure didn't get very far before the DPE said, "I can't help, I can't give instruction."

That was painful to watch.

I thought for sure that within the first ten minutes (if not less) the examiner would have said "take us back to the airport...we're done"

I stopped watching after the first 30 seconds Any particular timestamp highlights?

Damn, how did you dig up my checkride footage?
I didn't even know the DPE was filming it.

I wonder if this is the same DPE that signed off on that "Hello? Hello?" Japanese girl's commercial certificate.

DPE: "Nice weather. High overcast"

Student: "Last night when I called to get the weather, I was blown away by what he told me"

I spent quite awhile looking into this a few years ago. The only difference I could find was the the PTS requirements for navigation - diversion were slightly less rigorous for sport pilot than private pilot.

I thought he was going to fail him when he couldn't plot the course to find a heading for his diversion.

I am pretty sure it is for real. And yeah, it's tough to watch. Grab a beer. It's entertaining, to an extent. Makes you kind of curious how he got through the oral.

Ehh...Oral, we don't need no stinking oral exam, fire this bird up!

I can hear the examiner saying that anyway.

Not really any difference from a check ride perspective between sport and private accept for maybe recovery from unusual attitudes.

Such a big break down in the process. Between the instructor, whoever did the stage checks, and the examiner, someone was supposed to get this guy better prepared.

I can understand if you were a mile or two over one of your speeds, or just a little past your landing spot on the short field landing, but it seems like there was nothing that would get this guy to fail.

I don't post much, but thought some of you would get a kick out of it.

The engine out was rough to watch as well. He didn't know anything except for best glide and pick out a field.

Cringe: 17:20 calling tower at uncontrolled field.

That was bad. I hope that student got some more training. I know for sure the examiner I had would have turned us around over the chart deal. The first thing he did was turn the GPS to the black screen as soon as it came on.

20:40 DPE calls him out for dependence on screens
Edit: man, DPE is agitated and should be ending this. Keep listening for a bit

27:00 "Remember THESE AREN'T Footrests!! Move em"

28:00 slow flight /PTS rant.
Why is this guy a pilot? In my area no less...

Honestly he basically admits he hasn't read the PTS... That is game over.

Wow. Just skipped to that part, and noticed he admitted it in his comments to the video.

Either his CFI let him down, he didn't do his homework, or he got so nervous he forgot.

Tell your friends that Lou the DPE is giving out sport pilot licenses! Curious if he still flys or was this just something he did to tell the ladies at parties that he's a pilot.

Thank God this DPE is local to me.
I am going to take my IR checkride w/ him tomorrow because why not.

Oh Geez. I am watching the power off stall.
This is a train wreck

What CFI would have signed him off?

Damn, I had to comment on the video and I couldn't "congratulate" him like so many others.

HAHAHAHAH!!!! Engine out

"I have assessed that the engine is still running, the problem is that the throttle is pulled out"

The DPE didn't want to fail him, he was thinking, "WTF will he do next? I gotta see this!"

52:00 another pilot busts him on not specifying a runway

This is disgusting. What a joke and a disgrace. This guy passed? I only watched a few minutes- he doesn't even know what slow flight is and doesn't know what a power off stall is or how to do it. It's an insult to those of us who studied and worked hard and flew with real CFIs and tough examiners. And he seems to think it's amusing or funny that he doesn't know it- they both do. Horrendous. Someone take away that DPE's credentials. I hope I never fly where "PilotMatt" flies. God help us all.
