Hey folks,

I'm about to get married - December 28th, less than two weeks to go! Since she's a teacher, we don't have much time for a honeymoon right away and we were planning on doing that during her spring break in late April. However, we'd kinda like to get away for a few days - Say, the 29th through the 1st - And preferably somewhere warm!

The Mooney can do a bit over 1000nm on a tank of avgas, and I'm based at KMWC in Milwaukee, WI. Suggestions?

Mount Magazine Resort: If you want a nice view and quite. Its here in AR so without pulling out FF you might be a little far for one tank

Congratulations!

South Texas comes to mind. I always like Corpus, although Port Aransas looks like fun, as well. That would be my choice. We were thinking about doing something similar over Christmas. I also know a lot of people who fly to Destin, FL and enjoy it.

Naah, AR is only about a half tank for me. However... Didn't you guys just have an ice storm? Not warm enough, sorry. ;)

I know of a cozy cabin in Sidnaw!

Hah! *Definitely* not warm enough! Not to mention, the Mooney doesn't have skis!

from WI what about like South Carolina, its just at your 1k nm mark and its def warmer there..

Congratulations!

Thanks!

Hmmm. KMWC-KRAS is 1017nm. That could be do-able, especially since there's usually some dirt cheap 100LL down that way. Never been to that particular part of Texas, either.

She had mentioned Hilton Head as a possibility, but when I searched for that here, I found a thread that made St. Simons Island sound much better. KMWC-KSSI is about 790nm if I go down the lakeshore.

Yup, I can hit the coast in about 4 hours in the Mooney, with a trip down the lakeshore past Chicago. Jacksonville, FL would be about 5 hours. Pensacola, a tad less.

oh n congratulations!

Thanks! :)

Check out St. Augustine, FL KSGJ. That is where my wife and I go for the quick get away.

Dirt cheep 100LL at KJES on the way (also happens to be where we dump the kids with the in laws).

Depends upon what you're looking for. I went to Hilton Head for the first time this past summer and it was nice. The beach was incredibly flat/shallow! I flew to St. Simons about 4 years ago, and didn't like it as much.

However, if you're thinking of coming this far to Georgia, Savannah is a very romantic city! Lots of B&B's and good food and drink.

have done ssi in georgia ,nice quaint area. would prefer destin FLA. nice beach usually warm. Also like pensecola. If you had more time i would suggest key west.

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS, NICK!!!!

Second of all, Destin (DTS), Florida, on the panhandle. Hands down.

South Texas in December? Been there, done that. Only saving grace is that I was getting paid to be there.

What's there?

What did you like/not like about them both?

We're looking for someplace warm that has things to do. We don't golf, and it looks like we'd need to be in the southern half of Florida for swimmable water temps this time of year. I wouldn't mind a "pilot-bucket-list" kind of place, but looking at what's down there, Cedar Key is too short for the Mooney at 2300 feet and I've already been to Key West... Not sure what else is down that way.

However, if you're thinking of coming this far to Georgia, Savannah is a very romantic city! Lots of B&B's and good food and drink.

Well, I've been told that we're not allowed to go near any relatives on this trip. ;) That rules out Savannah, Daytona Beach, and Pensacola.

Savannah, GA(SAV). My teacher wife and family had a great time there last November. Historical, cultural, beautiful, romantic walks sipping wine(legal), great food at Pink House and nice shopping. 4.5 in the RV-10 from your place. Congratulations and wave as you fly over.

I think maybe Ken was referring to post 20 in this thread... Which is why I'm laughing. ;)

That's the 2nd reco for Destin - What all is there to do in Destin?

You are not missing a lot at Cedar Key, we used about 1500'-1600'.

If she is into science, Kennedy Space Ctr was a bunch of fun. No golf for us either.

Staniel Cay Yacht Club http://www.stanielcay.com/marina/ Airport is right there as well, they'll pick you up in a golf cart, you can snorkel in Thunderball Cave (where they filmed the underwater Bond scenes), grab a little boat and head 1/4 N where you can have your own private beach, they also have a dive shop that runs out dive trips. My favorite spot in the Bahamas.

Hope you find something Kent. I love Destin, but it can be cold this time of year and places there aren't built for cold. might check. In South Carolina, Charleston is like adult Disney Land if you like architecture. Lots of get-a-ways and touristy stuff. In Ashville, the Grove Park Inn is a great get-a-way and they are running some specials, but it's in the mountains. Plenty to do there inside though and great room service. They were having some holiday specials last I checked, but it is $$$

Best,

Dave

Cold and nasty storms brew up in the GOMEX that time of year.

The closest I have ever come to dying in a boat was in the Galveston area in late December.

I've been in the Corpus area late winter and it was a little better, but not much.

Fabulous beaches. Great fishing. Lots of watering holes. Great atmosphere -- not a historic city like Savannah, not a wacky tourist spot like Key West. Great place to mellow out, and still have enough going on to have fun at night.

Siesta Key, south of Sarasota, is my winter spot of choice. I've had a condo there for 12 years. (Sorry Kent, it's rented until May) But I think it's a little more than your 1000 miles.

That's one of the places I looked into for our Bahamas trip several months ago... But it looks like they're booked up.

I also think we're gonna stay in the US for this one - We only have a couple of days, really. I can do 1000nm from 12/29-1/1 but the Bahamas would require a RON somewhere on the way down with our schedule (couldn't leave until ~3 PM on 12/29). And on a trip that long, it'd be nice to be able to stay more than a couple of days. We may do our full-size honeymoon in April to the Bahamas again, or elsewhere in the Caribbean, or maybe leave the Mooney in the hangar and head to Hawaii.

Thanks Dave! I just looked at the New Year's deal at the Grove Park Inn, and you ain't kiddin' about the $$$... $688.50/night!

It's probably over your 1k NM distance, but Sedona AZ makes a good weekend.

I was THINKING Kent when I typed Nick. Sorry Kent!

Heh... No problem, we're practically twins.

Jekyll Island Georgia might be worth considering. The resort is very nice. We had a Diamond fly there one year. http://www.jekyllclub.com/
That would be my recommendation if it is within your range. Great place. We went I the summer and realized why the rich and famous made it their winter getaway!

Very close to SSI as well... What is there to do there?

Jeez, are the North Floridians so soft they've gotta go to South Florida for the winter? ;)

Honeymoon? I'd be thinking Cumberland island GA, just north of the FL state line.

Land on the 3,600ft strip on the island, or land at the big airport the next island south and take the ferry.

What's there to do there? Any accommodations that are more reasonably priced? If I spend $500+/night I won't be having a full-length honeymoon later, nor affording avgas for the trip home. ;)

Didn't see a strip on the island charted... ForeFlight revealed it, but says prior written permission required. Hmmm.

I'd do Amelia Island just a smidge to south rather than Cumberland and stay at Fernandino Beach, but just a bit further is St Augustine FL which is my favorite stop on the N/S trips on the coast.

Thanks!

Hilton Head can be very busy, it's more than a little built up, to the point where there are traffic jams on some Saturdays. I have a SC native friend who suggest Folly Beach as an alternative. Anywhere north of Florida, April is a spring month and goes between warm and cool.

Seaside, Florida is a neat place, I'd certainly have considered it for my own wedding trip if we didn't live so close.
