My phone contract is going to be up later this year, and I haven't decided which carrier, or even which type of phone - if a smartphone at all - I will be going with yet. That said, which of these would be the least evil:

Google/Android seems to infiltrate my life too much

Apple - I don't really care for their whole business model on apps/itunes/etc...

Windows/Microsoft - well, it's Windows/Microsoft.

What say you PoA?

I think android is the least evil.

Mac - I hate Itunes

Windows - All you can get now is that stupid tile thing

I love my Nokia 920 Windows Phone. I enjoyed the iphone 4s and I've never owned an Android.

Honestly, Google, Microsoft and Apple are less evil than your average carrier if you ask me. Microsoft is innovating, Google is dominating and Apple is feeling the squeeze of competition. Choose what works.

In order of preference:

1. Iphone
2. Google/Android
3. Windows phone

Having played with all three, Iphone meets my mission requirements the best. Very short learning curve and easy to use, if you can get past ITunes. But you don't even need ITunes anymore. The other two offer no more functionality. Google/Android has less restrictions on apps, but it hasn't been an issue for me and the only other advantages only count if you're a techno geek. Windows phone has a confusing interface and is somewhat buggy.

IPhone is really picky with what you can use (only iTunes apps) and if you don't like it, you can't change phones... Android let's you easily switch phones and transfer everything. Apple is very evil and Windows just sucks. If you're a Google user now, you will love android.

Droid.

Try the Motorola voice recognition on the new Razor. I rarely type text messages and emails any more. It is amazingly accurate.

A customer of mine bought the Google phone then a pay as you go cell phone to get the SIM card. By setting up the pay as you go for auto pay, I think he's paying $45 per month for 900min and unlimited data.... The phone, since it came from Google and not subsidized through a carrier, had just the OS on it and some simple apps - none of that other crap that the carriers install to help with the subsidy.

I voted Apple, since I like them, but there's no answer to the question posed.

They all want all your money. If you find that evil, you're kinda stuck. :)

One of them pays my paycheck. I have apps on all of them. Define evil: Walled garden, super snoopy, or just a little of both. Define angelic: easy and great app selection, huge selection and totally flexible, super easy but limited selection. I have no clue about BB. Everything crashes.

Yadda yadda - doesn't represent the opinions of my employer.

I've had android/google for 4 years, but they just keep getting nosier and nosier.

I listed what I don't like about the 3 major ones.

SRSLY. The Z10 is getting some pretty good reviews. I think it will run some/most android apps.

Which are gotten through the google store, where I need a google account?

The one that dictates the least to its user base is Google. That's the most important point.

I don't believe you hafta get android apps from the google store unless that's the only place the developer has chosen to make them available.

Not necessary. There are a number of alternate markets to use, and you don't need to be rooted to use them. You can also install an .apk off any website you want, without even using a market.

The Windows phones are the only ones I'd consider if switching from Android. iPhones are just too tiny.

And remember that some carriers, like AT&T, dictate what you are allowed to see in the Google store. I think TMobile (who's coverage sucks) does, too. Both limit the availability of tethering apps, for example.

Google IS nosy and you don't know the half of what they collect in terms of personal data. Apple does, too, but A doesn't typically link your mobile phone usage to your desktop to everything else. Google does.

So you end up restricted by both the software provider and the carrier. Choose carefully.

Have had both Android and Apple. Like Apple best since it works easier for me and I prefer ForeFlight and Cloud Ahoy and use the phone as backup.

Anything is pretty much the same anymore so just try them out.

Cheers

I have had them all. I don't like any of them really. Get a pager. I would if I could get unchained from this F'ing smartphone. The Only reason I have it is for my business.

There's something to be said for that.

Don't get me started on idiots that e-mail ten times instead of dialing my phone number to talk to me about their "emergencies".

I wish I could still use the Motorola Brick, phone slash blunt force self-defense weapon.

I still have one in a box somewhere if you want to carry it around to menace would-be assailants.:D

It's common for necessary things like Google Authenticator. Developers are not very enthusiastic at letting users side-load, they want to stomp out piracy even if it shrinks their market.

Growing up in the original Star Trek era, the characters on the show were always walking around looking at their Tricorders. Now I watch all the techno zombies paying for service contracts to walk around with their Tricorder - What a waste of money - Like you can't live a few hours without getting an email or checking something out on the web?

We're all waiting for the "Beam me up, Scotty" button.

If you want an Android or iPhone without all the spying, and you don't necessarily need the latest and greatest, you can always get one from Straight Talk, register it to a phony name and a disposable email account, and purchase refill cards from Wal-Mart using cash.

I suppose you also could use a prepaid Visa to buy apps, if you want them.

My contract (verizon) expired Saturday. I ordered my first smartphone today...as an upgrade.
I went with the iphone 4s because I've been using my ipad2 for about 2 years now and wanted the ability to use my apps on my phone.

Saturday, my son and I took a flight out to Montauk (MTP) from Farmingdale, Republic Airport (FRG) and I decided to try WingX Pro7. A really impressive tool!

BUT---Currently only the iphone and ipad versions have the moving map, sectionals and other charts. So for me the choice was iphone but I wanted something just a little bigger, like my wife's Samsung Galaxy:rolleyes:.

"Note: WingX for Android currently does not include Sectionals, IFR Enroute charts, or the Moving Map. We're working on adding these features"

I found an old Moto RAZR in a drawer while packing stuff to move. Ha. Reminded me of the days when my phone was a phone. :)

So where do you find a truly disposable email account these days that has no identifying information about you stored on their server?

And don't buy that pre-paid Visa at the grocery store with your loyalty card, nevermind the cameras overhead. :)

Evil is not a relevant characteristic.

Google/Android is most open - That's my natural preference - owned several. It is and will be the dominant platform around the world but that shouldn't drive one's choice.

Apple/iOS is best executed and maintained, it's also most closed - I've resisted but it was futile. I like it and is my current platform of choice

Microsoft is doomed as long as they are dragging Windows with them (I'm a Windows guy). Run away from their phones and tablets.

I'm a Mac OS person... I use Apple products (MacBook Pro, iMac, Mac Pro, iPad) in my work on a daily basis.
But... I prefer my Android phone. Go figure.

I think I like the more open feel of the platform. Of course you have to sift through the chaff.

Windows, I am totally ambivalent.

Well, as far as I'm concerned, "others" means people, not bots. Misleading bots is fine. In fact, I rather enjoy it.

I know that you work in he IT circus as well and you are correct. It's gotten to where when I hear the phone ring I cringe.

FWIW, I prefer emails to phone calls to talk about emergencies - that way I have it documented. After enough "emergencies," we can then talk about the number of issues that shouldn't have been emergencies with written proof.

That assumes enough knowledge on the part of the "emergency" reporter to even know if they're contacting the right person. :)

Apple is less evil. It may not be quite as flexible, but it allows you additional controls in certain ways.

I have known for a while that the 4.2 would not let you load and keep contacts on your phone without sending them to mother ship, so I haven't been loading contacts on the phone running that version. The Verizon phone ran 4.1, and it allowed you to keep the gmail sync without requiring contact sync. That worked well, and I maintained contacts on that phone (primary phone). All that changed with latest update. The new update eliminated the ability to sync mail without syncing other stuff... And set auto sync on. You either must sync ALL Google apps or none. Turn it off, and you will no longer be able to see gmail notification.

Worse, it sent ALL the "other contacts" (which store every email address you've sent from on gmail) to the phone without asking, and not only installed them to the gmail client, but put them into the regular (non gmail) client. So I now have a bunch of used-once addresses now loaded into the phone. And they come up when I send from the primary (non gmail) account. Highly annoying. I intentionally don't want all my contacts/typed send addresses polluting the other accounts. So I have turned off auto-sync, meaning that nothing will sync with google, not even gmail client. I would leave that on, but can't do so. What part of "I don't want to share contacts with Google's servers" don't they get?

My next phone will be Apple. My ability to decide what to share & who can mine it, is my decision, not Google's.

Since getting my Nexus 7, my HTC Evo has been nothing but a phone. My contract's up in July and I'm leaving Sprint, probably for Verizon. Android is sufficient. Apple doesn't grab me and Windows seems unnecessarily gimmicky, like substandard automobiles that compensate by including remote starters and other toys.

I much prefer email, even if it means just replying instantly that I can't work on it. I can flag the message, assign a task and salesforce/outlook will remind me I have to work on it later.

I keep my desk phone unplugged and my cell phone is just for alerts during the day.

call-a-holics drive me nuts.. if they're emailing and calling 10 times, then their planning probably sucks too ;)
