Discovery of several new potential Earth-like planets, at least one of which may be rocky, like our Earth (and not a gas giant). Article in Science and story on CNN.

Its all awesome - but the closest one I've seen mentioned is 6 light years away, IIRC. That means, even at the speed of light, it will take 6 years to get there. We don't travel anywhere near the speed of light.

:(

I wanna know!!

Speak for your own craft. Mine will make .5 beyond light speed. She may not look like much, but she's got it where it counts.

Psh...that's nothin. Mine made the Kessel Run in eleven parsecs.

(The original line does annoy me, however.)

All planets are rocky . . . the gas giants are just failed stars.

Who ever said we were special? First its our kids who are all 'special,' and we screw them up, and now it's the planet that is special? Give me a break.

I just recently saw the movie Battleship. Lets not do it for real.

What if you took off from a conveyor belt in a RV-10???? :dunno:

I can fly there in a LearBaron. Won't take more than 2 hours, but I will need a conveyor belt.

Apparently it was intentional, the idea being that if you could only go so fast, making the trip shorter would get you there sooner

I've heard three explanations.

Lucas goofed. (The one I most believe - especially after the second trilogy fiasco)

Han was talking out of his ass. (Lucas claims this was the case later, probably so he didn't have to admit to #1)

The expanded universe, which I'm not sure is canon, goes with the shorter is faster theory. But I think that's just a way for uber-dorks to justify the line.

"Nattering nabobs of negativism." :D

Why do you guys dump on our species? "Proof they're intelligent is they haven't contacted us" and the 'politically or environmentally' jab with multiple nodding head agreements...

If you don't the the political folks representing you then vote them out. If you don't like the rules protecting our environment then tell your reps.if you think aliens are avoiding us then I don't know what to suggest.

I just don't understand this group dumping on the group mentality.

I think its the Fox / Rush crowd spitting up what they get fed all day long. Just a guess on that, I really don't know...

The most convincing proof that there is intelligent life out there is that they have made no effort to contact us. :yesnod:
Sadly, it makes sense. Knowing how flaky and hysterical Mankind as a group can be, if I were them I'd be very, very circumspect about it. Maybe they have a "Prime Directive"; just greeting us all, publicly and officially, would cause such chaos, it could be deemed direct interference.

But we're not all nitwits, so I wonder, just like Lucy from Peanuts, why they haven't contacted me.
:D

We're you banned from the SZ, and thus have to post this tripe in a non-SZ post, or do you just have no sense do humor whatsoever?

Your post was the 'tripe'. Mine was an actual philosophical question steeped in deep thought.

Why do people like to take shots at ourselves as a group? We love 'Jay Walking' where Jay Leno asks people on the street simple questions and we howl with delight at the dumb responses to the questions we know. Deep down though we all know they don't show the correct answers on TV and we all know that given a thousand 'simple questions' each ourselves, every one of us would miss a couple. Doesn't matter....we, as a species, love to rip on each other.

And it goes further, we even rip on the entire group of people with ourselves included...thinking in our mind that of course 'I'm' excluded...but we all do it so we can't ALL be excluded. Its logic, not tripe.

Seems that all too many of the folks I vote for don't get elected either. That said, all to many of the ones I helped elect haven't done all that much good either.

To my view, I see my guy Obama try and try and try to reach across to the right only to be snubbed by them... the very folks he reached out to. The GOP is all about obstruction and that is due to their feeling that the TEA party is worth listening to.

They are now in the worst shape ever due to this misguided belief....their poll numbers are way down and they think re-branding their message is the answer. 'Throw Mexicans out but smile when you say it' is the answer. Nothing to the point of the stupid position ...just change the delivery..smile more. And yet the right has members who keep screwing it up. Calling Latinos 'wetbacks' and such. An actual GOP candidate for President during the LAST election had a summer home named "Ni**gar Ranch"...seriously. Smiling would fix that????

I know this is an unlikely place for support. People who own planes typically make more income. That's because other rich people (lawyers) have made this activity so expensive. But this is America and we have a lot of people who can't come close to affording a new Cessna 172. I'm one of them.

Because this is America there are actually quite few here who can afford airplanes, 80% of world's GA takes place in this country. I could afford a new 172 even though I am an immigrant, my wife doesn't work, never owned any business, strictly on salary. I don't think I could even afford 172's engine if I remained where I came from. Sorry but it is a lunacy to convert a planet-searching topic into "Fox/Rush crowd" tripe.

This thread is a prime example of why we don't want to make contact with you Earthlings.
We are having way too much fun just blending in and watching you go about your lives.

EDIT: The word "we" should be read as "they".

It said in the paper that it would take a little over twenty one million years for us to travel to those planets using todays technology. LoPresti is for sure going to be needed. http://www.speedmods.com/

Well using current thrust propulsion/gravity assist methods, yeah. But if they can figure out that ion drive, that will knock the time down considerably.
