OK I am not a wuss, but the other day I let it slip to my cousin/cfi that I had never landed on a grass strip. Said cousin/cfi says "HA" (some of you will recognize that) if you have me do your BFR I will throw things out there that you have never done and you will be landing on a grass field. :yikes:

Here's my question; Is the gear in the Arrow stout enough for a grass strip, I am 99% sure that the answer is yes but I thought I should deffer to the great knowledge base available to me here at POA.

I don't think you would hurt anything, but it would depend a lot on the field itself. Some are very well taken care of and some not so much... We have lots of options here in sw ohio!

Sorry to break it to you, but it sounds like you are a wuss :)

Well maintained grass is no problem for an arrow.
 
Arrow will do just fine on grass. Just remember that your take-off roll will increase.

Go up to the Packer field north of Columbus, 5E9. Nice, smooth turf, friendly people.
 
As someone who has actually landed an Arrow on grass, yes, it is done rather easily.
 
Thats what I thought but I just had to hear it, know what I mean, and only one of you called me a wuss. That is really surprising.

Which one is that? I've landed on a couple west of the Missouri, but nothing east.

My 182RG had no problems on the grass. Most of them had pavement intersecting so I also was taking off before I hit the pavement to prevent that "bump".
 
Our local school rents an Arrow, and has a reasonably nice grass strip that's the preferred rwy.
 
That makes two that have called me a wuss. Lets not make this a 20 page thread on calling me a wuss ok? Ha, BTW I need to find a time for you to change the oil with me helping so I am good for the next one. I bought all that stuff and now you make the oil change cost effective. Just my luck.
 
I think what you really need is someone to put some hours on it. Its lonely in that hanger!!
 
She flew Saturday, Chris got some time in. 1400 FPM climb in that cold air.

Times must have changed... 30 years ago the DPE required me to land and take off on a grass runway. http://www.airnav.com/airport/X61..

I got my license 27 years ago but never did visit a grass field. Used to fly with the boss and we went into grass fields in his Cherokee Six but that is fixed gear. Just never had the opportunity to do so.

You can thank insurance companies, or FBOs blaming it on insurance companies for that. One I rented from had a no grass fields policy because "insurance said we couldn't" and so I asked to see the policy. There was no exclusion for grass fields. I pointed that out, and they all kinda looked at each other like "oh, what do we give for an excuse now?"

They still said no grass, but at least they gave a decent reason after the talked to the powers that be - "we don't know what shape all of them are in, so we are saying no to all of them."

I have heard FBO's use that as an excuse.... In my case I had my own plane...

I've rented from a number of FBOs and always ask about their grass rwy policies. I've seen rental agreements that range from "any public field on a sectional is fine, but it better not be gravel" to "no unpaved runways" to "grass fields are limited to KABC, KXYZ, K123 because they are the only ones we regularly use and know what kind of shape they are in."
 
Tim, take your jeep over to the strip and handheld radio; make sure your'e clear and drive down teh strip at 40 mph. You ride will give you an idea what to expect. If you hit your head on the headliner, the Arrow isn't going to do well there....
 
I land on my strip all the time in my Comanche. Never had a problem.
 
good grief now I have to buy a jeep to fly????

All kidding aside thats really a good idea although my jeep is a dodge truck

Ever been over to Wainsville? They have one and the runway ain't the greatest.
 
Never have other than to drive by or fly over. I hear they have an Arrow for rent there however. MWO has a grass strip also.
 
I would never take a retractable gear plane or a multi-engine plane into a grass field. Except for the one where my hangar is. Or the one at our farm. Or ones near good fishing spots. Or ones close to people we want to visit. But other than that, no way. Those things are dangerous. If God wanted us to land on grass he would have made the world that way instead of covering it with asphalt.

tim, it ain't the plane. It ain't the field. It is the pilot. Good on you for doing this with an instructor for the first time. But the question is:

Are you good enough?

Given the amount of rain we have had in the last two days it would definitely be the field today.
 
Dual purpose it by putting a snow plow on the front. Make some AMU's clearing out the snow in front of your neighbor's hangar!

i was thinking a set of fenders would look good on it! and they keep the mud off the wings. :lol::yes:

Ask your cousin, if he breaks the aircraft, is he willing to pay for it.

Nobody is going to make him DO anything, Tom! If he chooses not to go, thats ok too. Its not a requirement. sheesh :rolleyes2:

Ok course, if he broke it he would pay for it.

Are you implying that landing in grass alone will break airplanes?
