14 CFR 110.2 defines: “Noncommon carriage means an aircraft operation for compensation or hire that does not involve a holding out to others."
AC 120-12A defines: "Carriage for hire which does not involve "holding out" is private carriage."

In many FARs the terms are used together as in: "A person authorized to engage in noncommon or private carriage...".

This suggests that private carriage and noncommon are synonymous terms and interchangeable. But is this true? Thank you.

Back when the Part 125 operations for large aircraft, DC-3, DC-4, etc. we were not allowed to hold out to the public, ie advertise. We could however, have contracts to haul cargo with limited comingling (undefined).

So we had contracts with GM, Ford, Chrysler, GM Guide, and a few others.
