That actually works? Really? What were they doing in the guard towers?

You almost have to figure that the pilot is a hostage, and you wouldn't want to disable the helo till it's on the ground. By that time, there's probably a pretty decent size crowd around the helo and a clean shot would be impossible.

That, or they were asleep.

Or maybe the stood there and stared in disbelief while the whole event transpired.

Or, they were asleep.

Not the first time that's happened either.

Oyyyy... Just read the story...like there wasn't enough tension over the Muslims in Belgium already. Pretty soon Belgium will see insurrection. It was simmering when I was there a few years ago.

Seemed pretty damn calm to me last summer. Biggest conflict is between the Flemish-speaking North and the French-speaking South, although that seemed more socioeconomic than anything.

I honestly thought you get shot on sight during a prison break. Or atleast tear gassed into submission.

Makes me wonder why they don't string a helicopter-dense mesh of taught thick high visibility steel cables over courtyards.

First reason, of course, is money. Some of the newly built joints string the bigger yards with cable, but retrofitting an old joint would be near impossible.
Secondly, any cable that goes to a fence is an invitation for someone on the ground to try and climb out
Finally, cable or mesh that's thick enough to stop a helo would also restrict any visiblity into the yard for the wall towers. Personally, I'd prefer that the tower Officer has a clean shot during your run-of-the-mill riot, than try and prevent a helo escape.
Hell, I work in a Max A place that just put up a fence after a successful escape from a cellblock roof a coupla' years ago. The place went through about 25 escapes and 120 years before someone came up with the fence idea. I'm guessing Helicopter Escape Prevention Systems are another 50 years down the road.
