Ack...city life
...you see an engine and automatically wonder if it will fit under a cowl.

BTW: can anyone ID the engine?

I watched about 6 wide load convoys come down the road out front with the truck trailer carrying huge white metal tanks with flanges. I gotta guess they were over 100 feet long, 35-40 feet diameter. There were pickups front and back doing the escort - all from the same company.

Yeah, I did wonder how much AvGas they could hold.

I'd always thought that the Cummins Turbo Diesel from my Dodge would've made a great aviation engine. 325 hp, designed to run at full power all day long, redline of 3000 RPMs.

Only problem: Weighs 1000 lbs. Ouchies.

Richard, I find myself asking the same question frequently when I see engines.

Just think of the advantage of having a forward CG? :)

Kenny, always putting a positive spin on things! :)

Just figuring you're adding roughly 500 lbs of weight to the airplane per engine... on a lot of aircraft there goes a significant portion of your useful load!

I'm going to say the cardboard box labeled "Perkins", the "Perkins" labels on the starter and the oil filter in the second picture might have been small hints? :)

I thought Perkins just made pancakes? Diesel engines seems quite a stretch!

Greg and Mari should know. :D

My Dad had a pair of Perkins diesels in a 43' Gulfstar yacht. The engines were bulletproof.

By the way, when I lived in Detroit, I saw a similar tractor-trailer rig that had just been in an accident. The highway was littered with V-8s.

I wonder if they just buffed 'em up and installed them anyway?

You know you're a pilot when ... you google the registration number of any airplanes that you see in movies or tv... and then get frustrated when you can't find it.

Just saw "Bucket List" last night - N7424D - doesn't show up correctly, or I've mis-remembered it ...

Good movie, btw.

2 1100 (50-250 or so HP depending on config) series and 1 400 ( 15-65hp +/-)series Perkins, and from the outfitting, I'd say they are going to one of the generator conversion companies. Too poor of a power to weight ratio for an airplane.
