Sugar cane was imported into Hawaii from SE Asia about when the European explorers brought it there. Later tea was brought into Hawaii were lately it has really started to boom as sugar production has decreased.

So there you have tea and sugar cane 'grown next' to each other.

Kinda reminds me of the joke about the dead body found in the woods in [name your favorite Southern state]. It couldn't be identified because there were no dental records and everyone's DNA was the same.
