It appears that Yahoo has been hacked. Went to check a group there tonight and couldn't get the IP address. WHOIS returns the following:

whois -h whois.crsnic.net yahoo.com ...

Whois Server Version 2.0

Domain names in the .com and .net domains can now be registered
with many different competing registrars. Go to http://www.internic.net
for detailed information.

Either they fixed it already or the hack is elsewhere (DNS server?) as I can access the site (including some groups) just fine. No mention of a hack on the home page either.

Anybody can add "yahoo.com" as a subdomain, which is what happened there. I dunno what that gets you except I'll bet that it takes advantage of another bug in *cough* some browsers helpfully trying to find the domain by doing a search for likely matches. Or they get people making typos.

You would have to be in one of those domains where it would have search path like "Check .com , then .net, then .br etc." IE and firefox will check .com and .net if you don't supply that. That is slightly dangerous, too.

Dunno. I can get in now. Funny that it was only Yahoo I had trouble with....
